Overview
This Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) posting will be used to fill temporary aide vacant positions in Canon City. These positions will work at multiple locations throughout the Canon City area.
Terms of EmploymentTemporary Aides are limited pursuant to the Colorado constitution. A temporary employee may work no more than nine (9) months in a 12-month period. The 12-month period is defined as a rolling 12-month period that begins with the first day of work for the temporary assignment.

The Correctional Officer I (CO I) position maintains the safety and security of CDOC prison facilities. Correctional Officers support the CDOC Mission, Vision and Values with integrity and commitment while preparing inmates for community reentry. They communicate professionally with inmates and their families, coworkers, supervisors, managers and the public; cooperate with other staff members and work as a cohesive team, while managing a diverse inmate population.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Work directly with inmates in a locked facility;
- Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas;
- Man an armed post (this requires annual firearms certification);
- Monitor facility perimeter, detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles;
- Operate a variety of mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms;
- Control movement of inmates throughout the daily schedule;
- Escort and transport inmates in authorized state vehicles;
- Monitor visiting areas;
- Conduct formal, informal and emergency counts;
- Cross check and maintain movement logs;
- Conduct searches for contraband (including canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip and vehicle searches);
- Inspect facility and cells to maintain health, safety and sanitation standards;
- Inspect inmate mail and property;
- Respond to emergencies (fights, medical emergencies, fires, escapes) using established protocols;
- Follow tool and key control procedures, ensure proper storage and documentation;
- Attend roll call and document incidents using established reporting practices;
- Communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors.
Positions may require working additional hours/shifts to maintain safety and security of 24/7 facilities.
Minimum QualificationsMinimum Qualification: High School Diploma or a GED certificate.

- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Possess a valid and unrestricted driver’s license; maintain a safe driving record; see policy for further details.
- Former State employees with prior disciplinary termination or resignation will be considered for eligibility with explanations provided.
- No felony convictions; compliance with various statutes related to employment of individuals in contact with offenders; considerations of sexual harassment.
- Successful completion of a background investigation; provide disposition of charges if applicable.
