Overview

The Town of Keenesburg seeks officers to help shape our NEWLY formed police department. Our town is growing and we need qualified officers to be instrumental in growing needs.

POSITION OBJECTIVES: Under the general supervision of the Police Chief, the Police Officer will follow standard procedures and laws, perform a wide variety of police and law enforcement duties, including the protection of property, crime detection, and public safety. May be assigned to an area of specialty as needed and assigned. Enforces State of Colorado Statutes and Town of Keenesburg Municipal Code to protect and serve the Town.

Patrols the Town to maintain order, prevent crimes, and protect life and property. Responds to calls for service, conducts preliminary and follow-up investigations through interviews, gathering and securing evidence.

Responsibilities
  • Responds to priority calls regarding public disturbances, criminal, civil or emergency situations.
  • May provide emergency medical assistance, traffic control, and otherwise ensure attention is given to public safety.
  • Detects and prevents criminal activities by surveillance of assigned business and residential areas. Notes possible criminal occurrences and takes steps to prevent criminal actions. Promotes crime prevention by initiating contact with businesses and residents including explaining applicable laws, soliciting cooperation in crime reporting, and otherwise creating good rapport with citizens.
  • Conducts a variety of community-oriented policing activities, including eliciting business and community participation, working with community groups, conducting welfare checks, etc. Investigates crime scenes or accidents and assists other officers. Protects evidence, takes testimony from witnesses, and assists detectives in specialized investigations.
  • Enforces traffic laws, vehicle codes, and promotes traffic safety. Notes illegal or unsafe driving practices and advises or makes arrests as appropriate. Directs traffic, reports unsafe road conditions, and otherwise promotes vehicular and pedestrian safety.
  • Prepares a variety of daily reports and logs.
  • Prepares and provides testimony in court and works with prosecution attorneys.
  • Provides a variety of related police services including transport of detainees, assistance to motorists, and mediates family disturbances.
  • Provides code enforcement and animal control activities. Issues appropriate citations and takes immediate actions to mitigate problems and disputes.
  • At advanced levels, may be assigned as a Field Training Officer, School Resource Officer (SRO), Detective, Drug Task Force Member, SWAT Team, or other specialty assignment. May conduct or assist with in-depth investigations involving felonies or other serious offenses and works closely with District Attorneys regarding such cases.

  • Law and Government: knowledge of laws, penal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, and the democratic political process.
  • Psychology: knowledge of basic human behavior and performance, including individual differences in ability, personality, learning, and motivation.
  • Knowledge of community policing techniques and programs.
  • Knowledge of emergency medical and first aid practices.
  • Mechanical/Technical: skilled in the safe operation of diverse equipment; including operating motor vehicles in hazardous situations, use of computers, radios, weapons, and other police equipment.
  • Ability to act effectively in crisis situations.
  • Active Listening: skilled in listening to what other people are saying and asking appropriate questions.
  • Service Orientation: skilled in actively looking for ways to help people, tactfully and effectively interacting with citizens in a wide variety of stressful situations.
  • Critical Thinking: ability to use logic and analysis to identify the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches.
