Correctional Officer I - TEMPORARY AIDE - Canon Facilities
Job DescriptionThe Correctional Officer I (CO I) position maintains the safety and security of Colorado Department of Corrections' (CDOC) prison facilities throughout the state. Correctional Officers support the CDOC Mission, Vision and Values with integrity and commitment while preparing inmates for community reentry. Officers communicate professionally with inmates, families, coworkers, supervisors, managers and the public; cooperate with other staff and work as a cohesive team to manage a diverse inmate population.
Responsibilities- Work directly with inmates in a locked facility
- Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas
- Man an armed post (annual firearms certification)
- Monitor facility perimeter, detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles
- Operate a variety of mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms
- Control movement of inmates throughout the daily schedule
- Escort and transport inmates in authorized state vehicles
- Monitor visiting areas
- Conduct formal, informal and emergency counts
- Cross check and maintain movement logs
- Conduct searches for contraband (canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip and vehicle searches)
- Inspect facility and cells to maintain health, safety and sanitation standards
- Inspect inmate mail and property
- Respond to emergencies and incidents using established protocols
- Document incidents using established reporting practices
- Communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors
- Attend roll call
- Follow tool and key control procedures and ensure proper storage and documentation
High School Diploma or a GED certificate.
Conditions of Employment- Applicants must acknowledge and agree to Conditions of Employment within the application process.
- Applicants must be legally eligible to work in the United States; CDOC uses e-Verify and does not sponsor non-residents.
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Possess a valid and unrestricted driver’s license
- Former state employees with prior termination must disclose; generally prior disciplinary termination or resignation in lieu of termination may disqualify
- Successful completion of a background investigation
- All job offers are contingent upon a health screening
- Complete Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training (including Defensive Tactics)
- Willing to work all shifts, overtime, weekends and holidays; may be assigned to 24/7 facilities
- Willing to use physical force as trained (including firearms) and to work in a locked facility with variable conditions
- TB screening required for all new employees
- Strong work ethic, accountability, integrity and dependability

- Excellent customer service and attention to detail
- English reading and writing proficiency
- Effective communication; ability to observe, monitor, and report
- Knowledge of criminal justice systems and CDOC policies
- Computer skills and ability to document and communicate
- Ability to handle stressful and potentially violent situations
- Ability to learn and apply correctional methods for inmate reentry
- Ability to travel and transport inmates in state vehicles
- Willingness to work in a locked facility and to adhere to safety protocols
- Willingness to adhere to the CDOC Drug Deterrence Program
- Self-control and emotional resilience
- Bilingual
- Mentoring or volunteer experience
