Position: Patrol Sergeant City of Florence

General:

Under the general supervision of the Police Lieutenant or Chief of Police, performs variety of police duties enforcing municipal, state and federal ordinances and statutes necessary for the protection of life, safety, welfare and property of persons within the city; provides first line supervision to patrol officers and police reserves.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Incident evaluation: responds to or initiates call for service; obtains information and evaluates same to determine courses of action; identifies and preserves evidence; protects personal and public property
  • Interview/ interrogation: interviews victims, witnesses, complaints, suspicious persons, informants, medical personnel, prisoners, etc.; makes legal admonishments; interrogates suspects
  • Arrest/ detention/ searches, approaches, detains, and/or apprehends suspects; effects arrests; restrains and subdues suspects/ subjects; conducts searches of persons; transports prisoners and members of the public as required to accomplish specific tasks
  • Maintains appropriate. courtesy and professional presence; provides referrals, mediates disputes, controls crowds; performs public speaking engagements and attends public meetings as assigned; assists in the implementation of crime prevention projects and participates in proactive programs as developed by this department
  • First—line supervisor: performs duties as a first—line supervisor to patrol officers

  • Police Reserves: assists Police Lieutenant and/or Police Chief in training of all officers
  • Maintains training records, entering them into POST and Omnigo, and keeping hard copies of completed records
  • Responsible for keeping the department within the mandatory training guidelines of POST
  • Sergeant will issue the monthly Lexipol DTB’s and Police One online trainings, as well as assist the Chief of Police and Patrol Commander with monthly trainings
  • Assuming command: shall take command, unless a senior ranking officer is on scene, of all major incidents within the jurisdiction
  • Responsible for insuring that all duty items listed previously are performed properly, efficiently, and in a timely manner
  • Responsible for proper care of city owned equipment used for and during the course of discharging duties and responsibilities of this position
  • Responsible for proper notification to supervisors of all needed repairs or replacement of equipment or supplies
  • Responsible for needed and necessary follow up on traffic accident, incident and offense reports. Including checking and approving reports for patrol officers.
  • Responsible for familiarizing self with jurisdictional area and boundaries
  • Responsible for familiarizing self with the people living in the area
  • Responsible for learning, understanding, and maintaining an extensive knowledge of municipal ordinances, state statutes, federal regulations and laws
  • Responsible for positive public relations
  • Responsible for cooperating with other employees, departments and supervisors
  • Responsible for insuring-responsibilities are kept and duties are performed by patrol officers and police reserves under his command
