Project Controls Specialist - Construction Finance

About the Role

The Construction Project Controls Specialist is responsible for independently reviewing, evaluating, and validating project controls systems and processes across active construction projects. This role plays a key part in ensuring the accuracy, consistency, and effectiveness of cost management, scheduling, risk management, change control, and project reporting.

The Specialist provides objective oversight to confirm alignment with contractual requirements, internal standards, and industry best practices, while identifying potential risks, inefficiencies, and opportunities for improvement. This position partners closely with project teams and leadership to strengthen project controls execution and support successful project outcomes.

This is an on-site position based at our corporate office in Broomfield, CO, working Monday–Friday, with approximately 15% travel as needed.

Essential Functions

Project Controls Auditing

  • Conduct independent audits of project controls systems, procedures, and documentation across construction projects.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of cost control, schedule control, change management, risk management, and forecasting processes.
  • Assess compliance with contract terms, internal policies, and applicable regulatory or funding requirements.
  • Verify the accuracy and reliability of project data, reports, and dashboards.
  • Review project budgets, cost estimates, cost reports, and forecasts for accuracy and completeness.
  • Audit change orders, claims, contingencies, and allowances to ensure proper approval and documentation.
  • Identify cost variances, trends, and potential overruns, and assess mitigation strategies.
  • Audit project risk registers and risk management processes.
  • Assess how risks, opportunities, and changes are identified, evaluated, approved, and incorporated into cost and schedule forecasts.
  • Review the effectiveness of change control governance and documentation.

Reporting & Governance

  • Evaluate the consistency, timeliness, and quality of project controls reporting.
  • Prepare clear, objective audit reports outlining findings, root causes, impacts, and recommendations.
  • Present audit results to project leadership, senior management, or clients as required.
  • Track corrective actions and follow up on implementation.

Continuous Improvement & Advisory Support

  • Identify systemic issues, control gaps, and best practice improvements across projects.
  • Provide advisory input to strengthen project controls frameworks, standards, and procedures.
  • Support the development of lessons learned and knowledge sharing initiatives.

Travel and Work Location

  • Travel is required as needed – Estimate 15%
  • Work Location is Full Time in the Broomfield, CO Office

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Finance/Accounting, or a related field
    • Equivalent professional experience may substitute for formal education.
  • 5–8 years of progressive experience in one or more of the following:
    • Construction project controls
    • Cost engineering / cost control
    • Project scheduling (CPM)
    • Project management or project auditing
  • Direct experience working on active construction or capital projects (not purely financial audits).
  • Working knowledge of:
    • Cost estimating, budgeting, and forecasting
    • Schedule development and analysis (CPM)
    • Change management and claims support
    • Risk and contingency management
