Rio Grande Hospital and Clinics seeks an experienced, strategic, and mission-driven Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to serve as a key member of the executive leadership team. The CFO will provide overall financial leadership for the organization, ensuring fiscal integrity, regulatory compliance, and long-term financial sustainability in a complex rural healthcare environment.
The CFO will oversee all financial operations, including accounting, budgeting, revenue cycle, reimbursement, financial reporting, audit, and strategic financial planning. This leader will work closely with the CEO, executive team, medical staff leadership, and Board of Directors to support organizational strategy and strengthen the hospital’s financial position.
Key Responsibilities Financial Leadership & Strategy- Serve as the principal financial advisor to the CEO and Board of Directors.
- Develop and execute short- and long-term financial strategies aligned with organizational goals.
- Provide clear, timely, and actionable financial reporting and analysis.
- Manage liquid assets of the organization to pay timely all obligations of the organization.
- Oversee accounting, general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and financial reporting functions.
- Lead annual budgeting, forecasting, and long-range financial planning processes.
- Ensure strong internal controls and compliance with GAAP, state, and federal regulations.
- Provide executive oversight of revenue cycle operations, including billing, collections, and payer relations.
- Optimize reimbursement under Critical Access Hospital (CAH) cost-based reimbursement and other payment models.
- Monitor payer mix, denial trends, and regulatory changes impacting reimbursement (e.g., Medicare, Medicaid, 340B).
- Lead annual financial audits and coordinate with external auditors.
- Ensure that financial information is kept in a manner that optimizes the medicare cost report.
- Work with the cost report consultant to prepare, validate and submit on time the annual cost report.
- Work with a CPA firm to prepare the annual IRS form 990 tax return.
- Ensure compliance with Medicare, Medicaid, grant, and other regulatory requirements.
- Identify financial risks and develop mitigation strategies.
- Support service line development, capital planning, and facility investments.
- Evaluate financial feasibility of new programs, partnerships, and community initiatives.
- Assist with grant management, financing, and funding opportunities.
- Lead, mentor, and develop the finance team, fostering a culture of accountability and excellence.
- Collaborate effectively with clinical, operational, and administrative leaders.
- Communicate complex financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting and financial leadership experience
, in rural healthcare. - Demonstrated experience with hospital financial operations, budgeting, and reimbursement.

- Master’s degree (MBA, MHA, or similar).
