Principal Optics Engineer – 621
We are seeking a Principal Optics Engineer in our Broomfield, CO Location.
Key Responsibilities:- Work with the Architecture team to define future generations of quantum computers.
- Act as a consultant to laser and beamline contractors and/or internal development teams and lead the development of subassembly requirements from higher level requirements. You will ensure that requirements are understood, mutually compatible, and well-formed.
- Support Systems Engineering in developing verification plans for lasers and optical subsystems.
- Gather project requirements, turn them into action plans, and ensure the team completes tasking on‑time with proper prioritization.
- Provide technical expertise to laser and optical projects with the goal of maximizing performance, robustness, and scalability.
- Mentor team members on technical and scientific topics.
- Integrate complex, high‑precision optical sub‑assemblies into higher level systems and maintain them.
- Travel up to 25% to support development partnerships.
- Bachelor's Degree minimum.
- Minimum 10+ years' experience (advanced degree inclusive) using, maintaining, and designing optical, opto‑mechanical and/or laser systems. Laser systems expertise must include experience with fiber optic components, electro‑optic and acousto‑optic modulators, and noise‑reduction servos.
- Due to contractual requirements, the candidate must be a U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, permanent resident or green card holder, workers granted asylum or refugee status).
- Due to national security requirements imposed by the U.S. Government, candidates for this position must not be a People's Republic of China national or Russian national unless the candidate is also a U.S. citizen.
- Ph.D. or Masters in Optics, Physics, Applied Physics, or related field preferred.
- Experience characterizing, stabilizing, and servoing diode, fiber, and/or Ti:
Sapphire lasers. - Experience leading and mentoring small (2‑5 people) technical teams through design, prototype, testing, alignment and final deliverable for novel optical assemblies.
- A demonstrated history of mentoring junior scientists.
- Broad understanding of optical principles and practices and intimate knowledge and experience applying this knowledge to projects.
- Experience with Zemax and/or Solidworks/CAD for designing optical and optomechanical systems.
- Experience with data analysis (taking, plotting, analyzing, fitting and interpreting relevant data from optical testing experiments).
- Experience with Design for Manufacturing and Design for Cost.
- Experience with engineering change documentation; ability to work from assembly drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, sketches and other written, visual and oral instructions.
Compensation & Benefits:
- Salary range: $192,000–$240,000 annually.
