Certifications

Required:

Colorado Special Education teaching license required.

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Special Education.

The role supports students with  moderate to severe disabilities  in a center-based learning program. Staff provide specialized instruction, behavioral support, and life-skills training while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to meet each student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP).

Key Responsibilities

1. Provide Specialized Instruction

Deliver individualized academic and functional instruction to students with disabilities.

Adapt curriculum and teaching methods based on student needs and IEP goals.

Teach life skills, communication skills, and social/emotional development.

2. Implement IEP Goals

Follow and implement each student’s  Individualized Education Program (IEP) .

Track progress and collect data on student performance.

Assist in updating goals and participating in IEP meetings.

3. Behavior Support

Implement behavior intervention plans (BIPs).

Support students with emotional, behavioral, or developmental challenges.

Use positive behavior support strategies.

4. Student Support & Supervision

Assist students with:

Personal care

Transitions

Classroom participation

Mobility and safety

Provide one-on-one or small-group support.

5. Collaboration

Work closely with:

Special education teachers

Speech-language pathologists

Occupational therapists

School psychologists

General education teachers

Families

6. Documentation

Maintain accurate records of student progress and behavior.

Assist with documentation required for special education compliance.

Work Environment

Center-based programs serve students  from preschool through high school  depending on the location.

Students often have:

Autism

Intellectual disabilities

Emotional/behavioral disorders

Multiple disabilities

Programs are typically  small, highly structured classrooms  with a higher staff-to-student ratio.
