Outdoor Recreation Lead Program Instructor – Day Camps (Full‑Time/Part‑Time; Seasonal)

Location: District‑wide (Edwards, CO; Eagle, CO; Gypsum, CO)

Description: Mountain Recreation provides a dynamic environment promoting skill development, movement, life skills, and fun. We seek enthusiastic, teamwork‑based applicants with strong communication and core values alignment.

Position Details
  • Job Title: Outdoor Recreation Lead Program Instructor – Day Camps
  • Schedule: Full‑time or part‑time; seasonal with options:
    • Option 1:
      Early‑May – Late‑September (overnight guiding)
    • Option 2:
      Early June – Mid‑August
    • Option 3:
      Combination of Option 1 and 2
  • Work Environment: Flexible hours across indoor and outdoor settings, often in extreme weather. Physical demands include walking, bending, kneeling, lifting up to 50 lbs, and moving equipment. Requires sustained mental focus and safety awareness.
  • Supervision: Reports to the Outdoor Recreation Supervisor and Coordinator; may directly supervise part‑time staff, volunteers, guides in training, and campers.
  • Salary: $21.50 – $26.87 /hour; DOE. Incentives include $1 /hour for Spanish/English bilingual skills and a possible end‑of‑season bonus of up to $200.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead outdoor recreation activities such as mountain biking, rock climbing, nature art, survival skills, environmental stewardship, skateboard, hiking, and stand‑up paddle boarding for youth ages 6‑10 and 11‑14.
  • Collaborate with an Assistant Instructor, creating programming of 3‑5 full‑day or half‑day sessions with 10‑12 youth per group.
  • Maintain risk management documentation and ensure safety protocols are followed.
  • Teach skills, facilitate team bonding, and manage behavior per established rules.
  • Greet families, handle check‑in/check‑out, and provide exceptional customer service.
  • Transport participants via district van to field sites.
  • Supervise and mentor Assistant Instructors and Guides in Training.
  • Assist with special events for partner organizations as needed.
  • Communicate with staff to address facility, equipment, and supply needs.
  • Inspect facilities and equipment, and maintain program supplies.
  • Plan, organize, and implement curriculum aligned with program objectives.
  • Set up, take down, and clean up after programs.
  • Respond to incidents, acting as Incident Commander when necessary.
  • Participate in required staff training before programming begins.
  • Serve as a mandatory reporter and comply with reporting guidelines.
  • Work with partner organizations, including recreation departments, school districts, towns, counties, special districts, non‑profits, and sport associations.
  • Instruct recreational classes as directed by Mountain Recreation or SOS Outreach.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Requirements Competencies and Qualifications
  • Knowledge of child development and ability to facilitate age‑appropriate activities.
  • Experience in outdoor recreation with familiarity of various outdoor activities.
  • Leadership experience in groups within camp or outdoor education settings.
  • Understanding of recreation program risk management.
  • Knowledge of facilities and equipment in the assigned area.
  • Team player who collaborates to achieve program goals.
  • Desire to positively impact the community through recreation and youth development.
