Overview
The Correctional Officer I (CO I) position maintains the safety and security of Colorado Department of Corrections' (CDOC) prison facilities throughout the state. Correctional Officers support the CDOC Mission, Vision and Values with integrity and commitment while preparing inmates for community reentry. Positions must cooperate with other staff members and work as a cohesive team, while managing a diverse inmate population.
Responsibilities- Work directly with inmates in a locked facility;
- Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas;
- Man an armed post (this requires annual firearms certification);
- Monitor facility perimeter, detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles;
- Operate a variety of mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms;
- Control movement of inmates throughout the daily schedule;
- Escort and transport inmates in authorized state vehicles;
- Monitor visiting areas;
- Conduct formal, informal and emergency counts;
- Cross check and maintain movement logs;
- Conduct searches for contraband (this may include canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip and vehicle searches);
- Inspect facility and cells to maintain health, safety and sanitation standards;
- Inspect inmate mail and property;
- Utilize proper protocols when responding to emergency situations, such as fights, medical emergencies, fires and escapes;
- Follow established tool and key control, ensure proper storage and documentation;
- Attend roll call;
- Document incidents and utilize established reporting practices;
- Communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors.
Positions are subject to working additional hours and/or shifts to maintain safety and security of facilities that are open 24/7.
Minimum Qualifications & Conditions Of EmploymentMinimum Qualification: High School Diploma or a GED certificate.

- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Possess a valid and unrestricted driver’s license and maintain a safe driving record.
- Former state employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must disclose information as required.
- No felony convictions and other background requirements as described in the posting.
- Successful completion of a background investigation.
- All job offers are contingent upon a health screening.
- Successfully pass all modules of the Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, to include English reading comprehension and relevant competency assessments.
- Possess physical ability to complete Defensive Tactics and related requirements.
- Willingness to work shifts, weekends, holidays, and to report during inclement weather.
- Willingness to use physical force and to work in a locked facility with fluctuating conditions.
- Willingness to travel and transport inmates in a state vehicle; TB screening is required for all new employees.
- Strong work ethic, accountability, integrity and dependability;

- Excellent customer service and attention to detail;
- English reading and writing proficiency;
- Ability to observe and communicate important information;
- Knowledge of criminal justice systems and related regulations (ADA, PREA, ARs, etc.);
- Moderate computer keyboarding and email usage;
- Ability to recount events in written form and learn CDOC mission and correctional methods for community reentry;
- Effective communication with inmate families and the public;
- Ability to operate security devices and learn firearms, restraints and security protocols;
- Willingness to follow chain of command and safety protocols;
- Ability to respond quickly to emergencies and to manage high-stress situations;
- Physical ability to perform duties and to work outdoors in various conditions;
- Compliance with CDOC Drug Deterrence Program and ability to maintain composure under pressure.
