Description Of Job

The Correctional Officer I (CO I) position maintains the safety and security of CDOC prison facilities throughout the state. CO I staff support the CDOC Mission, Vision and Values with integrity and commitment while preparing inmates for community reentry. They communicate professionally with inmates, families, coworkers, supervisors, managers and the public; work as part of a team; and manage a diverse inmate population.

Duties include, but are not limited to the following responsibilities.

  • Work directly with inmates in a locked facility
  • Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas
  • Man an armed post (annual firearms certification required)
  • Monitor facility perimeter and detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles
  • Operate a variety of mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms
  • Control movement of inmates throughout the daily schedule
  • Escort and transport inmates in authorized state vehicles
  • Monitor visiting areas
  • Conduct formal, informal and emergency counts
  • Cross check and maintain movement logs
  • Conduct searches for contraband (can include canine, metal detector, pat-down, perimeter, strip and vehicle searches)
  • Inspect facility and cells to maintain health, safety and sanitation standards
  • Inspect inmate mail and property
  • Utilize proper protocols when responding to emergencies (fights, medical emergencies, fires, escapes)
  • Follow established tool and key control; ensure proper storage and documentation
  • Attend roll call and document incidents using established reporting practices
  • Communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors

Positions are subject to working additional hours and/or shifts to maintain safety and security of facilities that are open 24/7.

Minimum Qualifications , Substitutions, Conditions Of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualification
High School Diploma or a GED certificate.

  • Ability to perform searches and use security equipment
  • Ability to respond to emergencies and to use physical force when necessary
  • Ability to work various shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays; travel as needed
  • Drug deterrence program adherence
  • Emotional and mental resilience to work in potentially violent environments
  • TB screening required for all new employees

Preferred Qualification
Bilingual; mentoring others or volunteer work.

Conditions Of Employment

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and maintain it in good standing as per State policies.
  • Former state employees with prior terminations may be disqualified except under extraordinary circumstances.
