Overview
Sterling Correctional Facility (SCF) is located in the northeast corner of Colorado, approximately 120 miles northeast of Denver. The facility covers 100 acres of the 765-acre site. The interior perimeter covers 80 acres. SCF officially opened in June 1999 and has a capacity of 2,488 with custody levels including Minimum, Minimum-Restricted, Medium, Close (general population) and Close (Management Control Comprehensive – MCC).
Limon Correctional Facility (LCF) is located on Highway 71, two miles south of the town of Limon, approximately 80 miles east of Denver. The facility sits on 320 acres, with 36 enclosed behind a 4,000 foot double-perimeter fence. LCF comprises 13 buildings providing housing and basic services including educational and work opportunities. The physical plant encompasses 377,400 square feet. LCF is a Level IV facility with a capacity of 938 offenders, housing a population of close custody (33.4%) and medium/minimum restricted custody (66.5%).
There are six general population living units and a total of 720 general population cells (218 double bunked). A separate Restrictive Housing Unit has 28 cells.

Description Of JobThe Correctional Officer I (CO I) maintains the safety and security of CDOC prison facilities. CO Is support the CDOC Mission, Vision and Values with integrity and commitment while preparing inmates for community reentry. Officers communicate professionally with inmates, their families, coworkers, supervisors, managers and the public; work as part of a cohesive team, and manage a diverse inmate population. Positions require working 24/7 and may include additional hours or shifts to maintain safety and security.
Responsibilities:
- Work directly with inmates in a locked facility
- Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas
- Man an armed post (annual firearms certification)
- Monitor facility perimeter, detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles
- Operate a variety of mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms
- Control movement of inmates throughout the daily schedule
- Escort and transport inmates in authorized state vehicles
- Monitor visiting areas
- Conduct formal, informal and emergency counts
- Cross check and maintain movement logs
- Conduct searches for contraband (canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip and vehicle searches)
- Inspect facility and cells to maintain health, safety and sanitation standards
- Inspect inmate mail and property
- Respond to emergencies and enforce safety protocols
- Attend roll call and document incidents using established reporting practices
- Communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors
Positions may require working shifts beyond regular hours to maintain facility security.

High School Diploma or GED.

- Complete background check and health screening; consent to hold harmless CDOC
- Successfully complete Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training including Defensive Tactics
- Possess physical ability to perform Defensive Tactics; passes may include specific physical requirements
- Willingness to work all shifts, weekends, holidays; able to report to work in inclement weather
- Willing and able to use physical force and firearms when trained
- Willing to work in a locked facility with varying conditions and temperatures
- Willing to travel and transport inmates in state vehicles
- TB screening required for all new employees
