Archaeological Field Director - Western Plains and Front Range

Tetra Tech Inc., a nationally recognized engineering and consulting firm, seeks Archaeological Field Directors for our Federal NEPA, NHPA, and Environmental Compliance team. The selected candidate will become part of the Sentinel (GBSD) cultural resource team and conduct field, administrative, and project planning tasks to support DoD and other Federal contracts. Field work typically runs from May to October each year, with possible duties outside the field season.

This is a part‑time/on‑call hourly position with opportunities for advancement depending on performance.

Responsibilities
  • Support field projects, including survey planning and execution, data collection, and reporting; field inventory, monitoring, testing, and site mitigation across the Great Plains and Front Range.
  • Oversee accurate recording of archaeological sites by field crews, GPS mapping, testing, data recovery, monitoring, and verification of data quality.
  • Primarily provide project coordination and supervision to crew chiefs; may lead a crew in the field.
  • Report daily work of crew chiefs and field crews and interface with project managers.
  • Prepare NRHP site evaluations and site management forms.
  • Perform daily QA/QC of field data to ensure accuracy.
  • Collaborate with Project Management, Principal Investigator, and provide technical guidance to crew chiefs and junior staff.
  • Assign and coordinate tasks to crew chiefs and technical crew members.
  • Coordinate and communicate effectively with permitting and land‑managing agencies, subcontractors, cooperators, and vendors.
  • Coordinate Right of Entry with subcontractors, cooperators, and field crews.
  • Support field logistics and planning to enable crews to execute fieldwork.
Qualifications
  • BA/BS degree in archaeology, anthropology, or closely related field required.
  • Master’s Degree in Anthropology/Archaeology with a concentration in North American Archaeology preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of Cultural Resource Management experience, 2+ years in a supervisory role required.
  • Archaeological experience in the Front Range or Great Plains required.
  • Prior experience writing site evaluations and site management forms, familiarity with QA/QC processes for field data required.
  • Experience working alongside Tribal partners valued.
  • Experience communicating with federal clients and cooperators required.
  • Direct experience with DoD cultural resource regulations and projects preferred.
  • Strong leadership experience managing large archaeological teams; deep understanding of Section 106 and NEPA.
  • Registered Professional Archaeologist preferred.
  • Proficiency with ESRI products (Survey
    123, Field Maps, Arc Pro) required.
  • Ability to work outdoors in extreme temperatures, walk up to 10 miles a day, and work field sessions up to two weeks long.
  • Willingness to travel regionally and nationally for sessions up to two weeks on a regular basis.
