Overview
Hourly Municipal Court Referee
Appointed by the presiding judge, the Municipal Court Referee will review and hear contested parking tickets and authorized violations of municipal code.
Positions Available- Per Diem Referee – On-call position. Hours will be scheduled as needed by the court.
- Regular Hourly Referee – Scheduled hours with a consistent work schedule.
This is an hourly (at-will) position with benefits limited to those required by applicable state and federal laws, which include Worker’s Compensation, Medicare, Unemployment Insurance, and PERA (Public Employees’ Retirement Association).
Responsibilities- Preside over hearings including appeals of notices/orders issued by code enforcement, post-tow matters/waiver of impound fees, hearings where trial findings may include assessment of penalty fines and contested photo enforcement identification complaints
- Review and apply appropriate ordinance, rules, and orders while documenting and filing appropriate paperwork both in writing and electronically into the court's case management system
- Must understand basic requirements of due process, be familiar with case processing, and able to read and follow the law
- All rights, duties, and authorities granted to the Office of Municipal Court Referee are established through Article 5 (Municipal Court Referee), Chapter 11 (Municipal Court) of the Code of the City of Colorado Springs 2001, as amended
- Knowledge of modern office technology
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
- Exceptional customer service
- Think independently and perform analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving functions
- Communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Effective independent judgment skills
- Ability to work under pressure and in a stressful environment
- Ability to handle difficult or confrontational situations
- A high school diploma or GED supplemented by specialized training in accounting, bookkeeping, auditing, or a related field
- One year of judicial, quasi-judicial, and/or code enforcement experience
One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education. Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements
Additional- Familiarity with the court
- An interest in resolving matters related to violations of city code
The background check process for this position includes being fingerprinted. Fingerprints will be used to check the FBI’s criminal history records.
