Description of JobThis position exists to conduct field investigations, select cost‑effective reclamation solutions, and implement projects intended to minimize potential human health and safety and environmental risks at individual inactive and revoked coal mining sites. The position gathers and collects field data, develops design and bid documents from selected alternatives, and observes and directs critical elements of mine reclamation construction projects. The position manages various coal mine fire and legacy coal mine safety closure and environmental projects conducted by the CIMRP, including developing contracts, construction plans, and specifications, negotiating with private landowners, overseeing and certifying construction is completed according to contract specifications, monitoring long‑term success of projects, and preparing written reports on environmental and mine safety closure projects.
The work area for this position is the west slope including but not limited to the counties of Mesa, Garfield, Moffat, Routt and Rio Blanco, and can include significant overnight travel and weekend work.
Minimum Qualifications
- Six (6) years of relevant experience within the mining, environmental, construction management, project management, or other geotechnical field related to the work assigned to the position.
- OR
- Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university in geo‑chemistry, geology, hydrology, natural science, environmental science, physical science, engineering, or a related science field.
- AND
- Two (2) years equivalent experience within the mining, environmental, construction management, project management, or other geotechnical field related to the work assigned to the position.

- Current or former State experience relevant to this position.
- The preferred candidate will have four (4) or more years experience related to the work assigned to the position.
- The preferred candidate will have excellent written, oral, interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently.
- The preferred candidate will have experience with active, inactive, or abandoned mines.
- The preferred candidate will have experience in coal mine fire investigations and evaluations.
- The preferred candidate will have experience in project/construction management.
- The preferred candidate will have experience performing field work.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- The ability to multi‑task.
- The ability to work well with a diverse population.
- Colorado residency is required at the time of application.
