Job OverviewSpEd Paraprofessional - SSN performs the day‑to‑day activities of teaching special education students while under the supervision of a teacher. The paraprofessional does not make diagnostic or long‑term education decisions regarding special education students, including individuals who may or may not be licensed. Assignments may involve non‑traditional learning environments such as building and off‑campus work sites. Supports the principal and classroom teachers in implementing the Significant Support Needs (SSN) programs to encourage a positive and safe learning environment.
Assists licensed special education teachers, occupational therapists, physical therapists, nurses, and other evaluative staff in implementing the goals of severely and profoundly disabled students.
Note:
This position addresses current student needs at the specified school. If the current program or school experiences a change in student needs, the individual filling this position may be required to relocate to another school where needs are demonstrated. This could occur at any time during the school year.
This position provides one‑on‑one support for a specific student. If the student transfers within the district, the position follows the student.
Responsibilities- Report consistently for work as scheduled
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Attain proficient or higher evaluations on established Performance Standards
- Obtain and maintain certifications necessary to support students with special needs
- Perform tasks such as meal preparation, feeding, and lunch clean‑up, implementing communication, oral motor, sensory integration, and physical IEP goals
- Carry out instructional programs and lessons in various learning environments as designated in the lesson plan
- Work with small groups of students to reinforce material under teacher supervision
- Assist with medical tasks such as dispensing medication, tube feeding, catheterization, toileting, diapering, suctioning, and may require exposure to blood, vomit, and infectious disease control
- Clean and disinfect regurgitation, blood, and urine
- Work with confidential special education student information
- Maneuver and secure wheelchairs
- Provide initial first aid and emergency care
- Accompany the student with physical tasks such as putting on and taking off outerwear, moving from room to room, using the lavatory, etc.
- Carry out programming using physical therapy support equipment
- Sanitize equipment and materials
- Monitor behavior contracts and reward systems for students
- Be trained and able to perform behavioral management through Nonviolent Crisis Intervention techniques when appropriate
- Assist with non‑standardized testing of students
- Develop and implement games and teaching aids
- Tutor students in various subject areas
- Assist students in preparation, production, and maintenance of materials and equipment as assigned
- Coordinate completion of assignments and/or job tasks with classroom teachers and/or employers
- Work with students in one‑to‑one or group situations
- Assist students in finding materials and books in the library
- Conduct story time for students
- Monitor students during recess, hall duty, passing periods, and loading of buses
- Supervise students in the use of computer programs
- Supervise swimming pool, weight room, and/or therapy pool
- Assist students with recitation, reading, and other curriculum tasks
- Accompany and assist the student while in classroom setting
- Attend pre‑job training, ongoing training, and meetings as required during the school year to remain up‑to‑date on job procedures
- Assist students in community‑based settings
- Serve as a resource person to the student personnel evaluation team concerning an assigned student as needed
- Work with teachers to integrate assisted technology into classrooms
- Maintain student files, updating information as appropriate
- Maintain, order, and organize inventory of materials and equipment for effective operation of the program
