POSITION SUMMARY:

This position takes a leading role in environmental education for kindergarteners through sixth graders in our summer camp programs. The goal of our programs is to instill and foster a lifelong love for nature and animals as well as to introduce/develop lifelong passions for activities that tie youth directly to those wildlife and wild places. Through live animal presentations, games, Zoo hikes and time in nature, Camp Educators provide children a link between people and the natural world.

Promotes professional working relationships with both internal and external customers. This position is non-supervisory in nature. Adheres to and supports all organizational policies, procedures, and standards.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must submit to and pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screening and criminal background check.
  • Must be able to provide proof that you can legally work in the United States.
  • CPR/First Aid certification valid through the entirety of camp.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in science or education, related field, or equivalent experience with demonstrated passion for science education in formal or informal setting.
  • Provide a qualification letter from your previous employer(s) confirming that you meet the experience requirements for a Program Leader according to licensing standards. This should indicate that you have completed at least three (3) months of full-time, or the equivalent in part-time (approximately 480 hours), satisfactory and verifiable experience working with school-age children.
  • Enthusiasm for working with and engaging children with patience and empathy.
  • Willingness to learn to work alongside a variety of animals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and demonstrate the ability to interact clearly and effectively with both internal and external customers.
  • Skilled in time management, dynamic teaching methods/delivery and problem solving.
  • Responsive to the needs of diverse learners and audiences.
  • Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co‑workers, vendors, Zoo staff, and the public.
  • Ability to make good decisions regarding the welfare of children, animals, guests and organization.
  • Teaching degree is beneficial, not required.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish a plus.

  • Must demonstrate regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Brings issues and process improvement ideas to the attention of the Supervisor through professional written and/or verbal skills.
  • Completes trainings as required.
  • Adheres to Company Dress Code Policy. Always "Zoo Crisp!"
  • Demonstrates appropriate level of time management in support of co‑workers and the entire team.
  • Represent the Zoo in a professional manner.
  • DEPARTMENTAL EXPECTATIONS:
  • To include but not limited to the following:
  • Assist in overseeing teenage volunteer(s) in our Zoo Crew program.
  • Create and present exceptional and dynamic interpretive programs featuring live animals, biofacts, games, crafts, and on‑site zoo hikes on our nature trail.
  • Must be able to collaborate with our experienced staff of environmental educators and further develop their educational and interpretive skills.
  • Identify and demonstrate conservation efforts for all education programs.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of program facilities at all times.
  • Ensure the safety of all program participants.
  • Other duties as assigned.
