Overview
Teacher of the Deaf - Secondary English Language Arts. This position reports to the Principal, School for the Deaf, and is responsible for providing standards-based instruction to 6th – 12th grade students who are Deaf/hard of hearing.
Responsibilities- Performs work associated with standards-based student instruction: prepares lesson plans, develops input for and presents daily instructional/learning activities based upon the Individualized Education Program (IEP) and school reform tenets under the direction of the Principal / School for the Deaf. Maintains a positive classroom environment utilizing appropriate classroom management, keeps students on task and engaged in learning.
- Demonstrates knowledge/skill in task analysis, assessment, progress monitoring, behavior management, organization/planning, curriculum development, current technology practices, parent relations and teamwork.
- Utilizes technology to model, teach, and assist students relative to classroom instruction and activities.
- Demonstrates knowledge/skill in project and technology-based learning;
Bi-Lingual education; literacy intervention strategies. - Organizes the classroom for collaborative group work; works in co-teaching teams; participates in the education/assessment team for developing and monitoring individual objectives and IEPs.
- Communicates effectively with students who are Deaf/hard of hearing; supports students’ social-emotional development.
- Serves as a Case Manager for assigned students, including developing, implementing, and progress-monitoring IEPs and facilitating IEP meetings.
- Coordinates with other service staff to support instruction, school reform efforts, strategic planning, and co-curricular activities.
- Participates in regular team and departmental meetings; provides parent consultation and participates in selected parent-focused activities.
- Engages in professional development and training/workshops as appropriate; performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications , Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.
- Master's Degree in Education or a closely related field from an accredited college or university, with specialization in Deaf Education, preferred and required within three years of hire.
- Must hold or be eligible for appropriate educator licensure in the State of Colorado within three years of hire, endorsed as a Special Education Specialist:
Deaf/Hard of Hearing. - If Special
Education:
Deaf/Hard of Hearing licensure is not held upon hire, then must hold or be eligible to hold State of Colorado Temporary Educator Eligibility licensure in Teacher of the Deaf within one year of hire. - Must hold or be eligible for State of Colorado Teacher endorsement in English Language Arts (7-12) and READ endorsement within one year of hire.
- If no State of Colorado educator licensure is held upon hire, then must hold or be eligible for substitute teacher licensure or educator licensure in the State of Colorado within one month of hire.
- Experience teaching/working with children who are Deaf/hard of hearing, or who may have multiple disabilities, desired.
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) at the Intermediate skill level at hire;
Advanced level within two years of hire.
- Knowledge of standards-based educational practices for students who are Deaf/hard-of-hearing; ability to assess and apply technology to perform the requirements of the position.
- Ability to use a variety of computer software applications; willingness to stay current with or without direct CSDB support.
- Ability to adapt teaching skills and class management to a technology-rich environment and to model, teach, and assist students with instruction and activities.
- Ability to establish high standards for student learning; effective communication with Deaf/hard-of-hearing students; responsiveness to feedback; teamwork and positive interpersonal skills.
