Overview
CSDB is accepting applications for current and future vacancies for Teacher of the Deaf. Applications are accepted on an on-going basis for vacancies in all instructional areas, including but not limited to all core content areas:
Elementary Education (Early Childhood Education);
English/Language Arts;
Science;
Mathematics;
Social Studies.
This position reports to the Principal, School for the Deaf, and is responsible for providing standards-based instruction and support to K-12 learners who are Deaf/hard of hearing and who may have additional needs. Uses Colorado Academic Standards and benchmarks in establishing instructional goals; provides assessments that monitor learner progress, in a safe and civil school environment.
Major duties and responsibilities- Performs work associated with standards-based instruction: prepares lesson plans, develops input for and presents daily instructional/learning activities based upon the Individualized Education Program (IEP) and school reform tenets under the direction of the Principal; maintains a positive learning environment utilizing appropriate positive behavior support strategies; keeps learners on task and engaged.
- Demonstrates knowledge/skill in the development and use of accommodations for learners who are Deaf/hard-of-hearing, and in areas such as task analysis, assessment, progress monitoring, behavior management, organization/planning, curriculum development, current technology practices, parent relations and teamwork.
- Utilizes technology to model, teach, and assist learners relative to instruction and activities.
- Demonstrates knowledge/skill in project and technology-based learning.
- Organizes the instructional environment for collaborative group work.
- Works in co-teaching teams with others.
- Works as part of the education/assessment team responsible for identifying, developing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating individual objectives for assigned learners.
- Utilizes appropriate communication skills with a commitment to literacy development for each learner.
- Supports learners' social-emotional development.
- Serves as an advocate for assigned learners.
- Coordinates effectively with other staff in facilitating instruction, supporting school reform efforts, strategic planning, and positively contributing to co-curricular activities.
- Positively serves as a team member in the School for the Deaf and the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind (CSDB) as a whole; participates in regular team and departmental meetings and other required instructional meetings.
- Provides parent consultation; participates in selected parent-focused activities.
- Seeks opportunities for and participates in professional development and training/workshops as appropriate.
- Performs other appropriate duties as assigned.
- Master s Degree in Education or closely related field with specialization in Deaf Education
- Must hold or be eligible for appropriate Colorado educator licensure, endorsed as a Special Education Specialist:
Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing, or comparable endorsement - Subject area endorsement or specialization
- Experience teaching/working with Deaf/hard-of-hearing learners or learners with multiple disabilities
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) at Advanced (3+) level as demonstrated through an appropriate assessment tool
- Knowledge of developmentally appropriate instruction for learners and standards-based practices for Deaf/hard-of-hearing students
- Ability to assess and apply technology to fulfill job requirements; proficient with common software and learning platforms; willingness to stay current as needed
- Ability to adapt teaching skills and learning environment management to a technology-rich setting
- Knowledge of ASL and English literacy development
- Ability to establish high standards for what learners must know and be able to do
- Ability to communicate effectively with Deaf/hard-of-hearing learners and staff
- Ability to respond to feedback and work cooperatively in a team
- Strong, positive interpersonal skills
- Full-time; standard academic year (currently 195 days, August to June)
- Annual base salary according to the Teacher Salary Schedule; excellent benefits
- Employment is at-will with no contract
