Overview
Teacher of the Deaf - Bilingual Preschool/Early Education Center role at Colorado Department of Revenue. This position is with the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind (CSDB) and reports to the Early Education Center Coordinator. CSDB is a Deaf and Blind-led academy focused on language, leadership, and learning.
Description Of JobThis position provides standards-based instruction and support to children in the CSDB Preschool to sixth grade who are Deaf and may have additional needs. Uses Colorado Academic Standards and benchmarks to establish instructional goals and provides assessments to monitor student progress in a safe, civil school environment.
Job Functions- Facilitate developmentally appropriate instruction and support for children and families; perform student assessments and identify family instructional needs; lead and contribute to the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for assigned students and families; prepare and implement instructional activities with necessary accommodations based on the IEP; coordinate with other agencies involved with the family.
- Prepare and deliver standards-based instruction; develop lesson plans and participate in daily instructional/learning activities based on the IEP and school reform tenets; maintain a positive learning environment with appropriate behavior support strategies; keep students engaged.
- Demonstrate knowledge/skill in early education, bilingual education, and family services; develop and use accommodations for Deaf children; conduct family assessment, task analysis, assessment, progress monitoring, behavior management; organize and plan curriculum and technology practices; foster parent relations and teamwork.
- Utilize technology to model, teach, and assist students relative to instruction and activities.
- Collaborate with the education/assessment team to identify, develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate individual objectives including language planning.
- Communicate effectively with students and staff who are Deaf/hard-of-hearing; advocate for students and families; coordinate with other service staff to facilitate instruction and support reform efforts; participate in co-curricular activities and meetings.
- Participate in Outreach Programs and CSDB activities; engage in selected parent-focused activities and professional development opportunities.
- Collaborate with the Bilingual Teacher of the Deaf for IEP meetings, student transitions, and language planning to support IEP success and multilingual-multimodal language exposure (ASL and spoken language).
- Provide bilingual support (ASL/English) aligned with each child’s IEP and language development plan.
- Perform other appropriate duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications , Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
- Master’s Degree in Education from a regionally accredited college or university, with preference in Deaf Education.
- Must hold or be eligible for appropriate Colorado educator licensure, endorsed as a Special Education Specialist:
Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing; preference for an added endorsement in Early Childhood. Elementary Education endorsement may be required. - Must hold, be eligible for, or obtain within two years from hire, qualifications to meet Colorado preschool licensure requirements.
- Experience teaching/working with children and families in an educational setting who are Deaf and/or have multiple disabilities.
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) at Advanced level as demonstrated by an appropriate assessment and policies.
- Best practices for developmentally appropriate instruction for children and families; standards-based educational practices for Deaf/hard-of-hearing students across settings.
- Technology proficiency for instruction, various software, and learning management systems; willingness to stay current with CSDB support.
- Ability to adapt teaching in technology-rich environments, including on-site, telepresence, and distance education;
- Literacy development in ASL, bilingual/multimodal and spoken English environments; ability to establish high standards for student outcomes.
