The SpEd Paraprofessional supports special education and typically developing preschool students under supervision of a teacher. The role assists licensed special education teachers, occupational therapists, physical therapists, nurses, and other evaluative staff in implementing student goals. The position may require relocation to another school if student needs change.
Responsibilities- Report consistently and perform work as scheduled.
- Assist in implementing the preschool curriculum and create a positive learning environment.
- Support licensed special education teachers and other staff in goal implementation.
- Prepare meals, assist with feeding and lunch clean‑up; support communication, oral motor, sensory integration, and physical IEP goals.
- Use instructional programs and lessons in various learning environments.
- Under teacher supervision, work with small groups to reinforce material.
- Assist with medical tasks (e.g., dispensing medication, tube feeding, catheterization, toileting, diapering, suctioning) and perform exposure to bodily fluids and infection control.
- Clean and disinfect regurgitation, blood, and urine.
- Handle confidential student information.
- Move and secure wheelchairs.
- Provide initial first aid and emergency care.
- Accompany students for physical tasks such as dressing, moving rooms, using lavatory.
- Operate physical therapy support equipment.
- Sanitize equipment and materials.
- Monitor behavior contracts and reward systems.
- Use Nonviolent Crisis Intervention techniques when needed.
- Assist with non‑standardized testing.
- Create and use games and teaching aids.
- Provide tutoring in various subject areas.
- Assist with preparing, producing, and maintaining materials.
- Coordinate completion of assignments with classroom teachers and employers.
- Work with students in one‑to‑one, small group, and classroom settings.
- Assist students in library tasks.
- Conduct story time.
- Supervise during recess, hall duty, passing periods, and bus loading.
- Supervise computer use.
- Assist with recitation, reading, and curriculum tasks.
- Accompany students in the classroom.
- Attend required meetings, conferences, and training.
- Serve as a resource for student personnel evaluation teams.
- Integrate assistive technology into classrooms.
- Maintain student files.
- Order and organize inventory of materials.
- Collect data for assessment.
- Complete daily paperwork (attendance, referrals, passes, physical therapy charts, etc.).
- Perform miscellaneous clerical duties.
- Laminates all material as needed.
- Prepare bulletin boards for parents and programs.
- Adapt to changing technologies and new equipment.
- Communicate effectively verbal and written.
- Input, retrieve, and manipulate data in software systems.
- Maintain accurate record keeping.
- Build relationships with diverse individuals.
