Animal Control Supervisor

Overview

The Animal Control Supervisor plans, directs and coordinates activities of the animal shelter, including animal control field services, shelter services, staff, and volunteers. All applications received during the recruitment period will be forwarded to the hiring department for review and consideration after the closing date Friday, January 30, 2026.

• Plan and direct the daily operations of the animal shelter.
• Schedule, direct, and inspect the work of staff and volunteers.
• Ensure procedures maintain public safety and health, and that animals receive proper care and treatment.
• Receive, investigate, and answer complaints regarding stray, wild, or owned animals reported at large, injured, or abused.
• Patrol streets or other locations to check for animals running at large, licenses, and vaccinations; rescue trapped, lost, or injured animals; investigate abuse complaints in the field; return animals to owners.
• Prepare, complete, check, and maintain appropriate reports and records; prepare monthly and annual reports to comply with State requirements.
• Monitor compliance with local and State codes, laws, and regulations pertaining to humane treatment of shelter animals.
• Ensure compliance with regulations required for routine and follow‑up inspections under the Commonwealth of Virginia's Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Division of Animal and Food Industry Services Office of Animal Care and Emergency Response.
• Complete and maintain compliance with the annual State Veterinarian Animal Control Officer Training report.
• Authorize vet treatment for injured or sick animals in custody.
• Plan and conduct City rabies clinics with the local Health Department and work with local Humane Society groups; assist in developing and administering public education programs, attend community meetings, and make presentations.
• Maintain animal control equipment and surveillance over animals confined to the shelter.
• Update and maintain all forms used at the animal shelter.
• Address public and professional inquiries.
• Perform other duties as required.

• High School diploma and 5 to less than 7 years of directly related experience; or
• Associate’s Degree and 3 to 5 years of directly related experience; or
• Bachelor’s Degree with at least 2 years of directly related experience; or
• Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• Must possess or be able to obtain all required certifications within a specified period;
  Animal Control Officer certification desirable.

Work requires some physical exertion: long periods of standing; walking over rough or difficult surfaces; recurring stooping, climbing, or walking; recurring lifting of moderately heavy items weighing less than 25 pounds, and occasional lifting of objects over 25 pounds. The environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions.
