The City of Colonial Heights seeks a Part‑time Recreation Assistant I (up to 28 hours per week) to assist in conducting recreation activities for various age groups. The role provides customer service, clerical support, and supervision of individual and team sports, events, classes, special programs, and recreational activities.

Responsibilities- Participate in and conduct recreation activities; attend staff meetings, review current programs, and make recommendations to supervisor; assist in supervising participants.
- Assist in keeping score or records for citywide youth sports programs as needed.
- Support after‑school programs, special events, and youth sports as assigned.
- Act as chaperone at dances, excursions, or special events.
- Observe volunteers to ensure compliance with city and department requirements, and make recommendations.
- Develop participant and spectator interest, enthusiasm, and participation.
- Issue, collect, and maintain city equipment and supplies.
- Help set up rooms for activities, meetings, and programs.
- Assist in facility rentals, ensuring applicants or users comply with policies and procedures.
- Assist in providing accurate program information to customers by familiarizing with department flyers and publications.
- At least 1 year of experience working with preschool, school‑aged, and/or teenage youth; ability to work outdoors.
- Must be at least 16 years old.
- Knowledge of recreation philosophy, planning, and organization; basic rules and understanding of common sports and games; principles of recreation safety and first aid techniques; modern office practices.
- Ability to plan, organize, promote, and coordinate programs; exercise initiative and creativity; establish effective relationships with employees, supervisors, agencies, participants, instructors, community leaders, and the general public; communicate effectively orally and in writing; produce computer documents via word processing and graphics applications.
- Successfully pass a background investigation and pre‑employment medical/drug screening.
- High school diploma or equivalent with at least 2 years of experience working with youth.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Internet Explorer, including social networking/media sites.
- Valid Virginia driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
The employee must frequently walk, sit, talk, and hear; occasionally use hands to operate tools; lift and/or move up to 50 lb and carry objects weighing up to 25 lb; possess mobility for outdoor recreational activities.
