Summary Of Primary Function/General Purpose Of Position

The Career Services Advisor provides support to the Manager of Career Services in serving the students and alumni of the Richmond HEIs in the delivery of comprehensive services, information resources, and programming that enable students to take active responsibility for their career decision‑making process including the job search and graduate education pursuits. This role supports the office’s many collaborative efforts to help meet the BSMH workforce needs and primarily supports the students of Southside College of Health Sciences.

  • With the Manager of Career Services, deliver co‑curricular career programming that is both rooted in adult learning principles and strategically aligned with the student lifecycle; these career education programs and services are designed to equip students and alumni with necessary job search skills and employment preparation strategies, including counseling appointments (face to face or virtual meetings), workshops and web‑based resources focused on resume writing, interviewing, self‑assessment, the job search, networking, social media, professionalism/branding, career paths and graduate education.
  • Create and update career resources on an on‑going basis with the guidance of the Career Services Coordinator to insure all are current, accessible, and effective learning tools and that they support the needs of the specific target cohort of health sciences students/alumni.
  • Deliver career services proactively with a case management approach, tracking cohorts, individual students and collaborating with Career Services Coordinator to provide appropriate data points for dashboard metrics and continuous improvement.
  • Foster relationships with nursing leaders and BSMH Talent Acquisition, and champion BSMH as a first‑choice employer with its culture, values and benefits.

Market, promote, organize and engage students, in conjunction with BSMH Talent Acquisition, to attend BSMH sponsored events, including but not limited to student career fairs and new graduate interview events, each semester.

  • Remain abreast of information regarding career fields, employment opportunities, volunteer opportunities and specific employers for full‑time, part‑time, externship and other opportunities; assist in communicating these opportunities via individual communications, cohort emails, social media and in‑class presentations.
  • Foster strategic relationships with the employer community, with priority given to BSMH leaders to support workforce needs and maximize the employment of students and new graduates.
  • Document student interactions in the student information system and assist in producing reports that accurately track career services activities/outcomes in response to leadership inquiries and for accreditation purposes.
Employment Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree. Master’s Degree in Education, Counseling, or related field is preferred.
  • 1+ years current higher education experience in, or related to, career services, including direct career counseling to students (or similar constituents), academic advising or healthcare talent acquisition.
  • Strong commitment to and demonstrated skills for working with a diverse student population and offering diverse and inclusive campus activities.
  • Ability to critically think, problem‑solve, manage conflict, operate within deadlines.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply student development /adult learning theory.

    Ability to work autonomously following training.
