Must-Haves (Required Qualifications)- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering (BSCHE, BSME, or BSEE)
- 10+ years of hands‑on automation engineering experience in a manufacturing environment
- Strong, proven experience with Delta
V (Emerson) control systems - Demonstrated experience leading automation projects from design through commissioning
- Deep knowledge of process control systems, instrumentation, and control system architecture
- Experience working within Process Safety Management (PSM) regulated environments
Preferred:
Batch (S88) experience
The Senior Automation Engineer is a key leadership role responsible for driving automation strategy, standardization, and continuous improvement across multiple North American manufacturing facilities. This position leads enterprise‑wide control system initiatives, supports major capital projects, and ensures best‑in‑class performance, reliability, cybersecurity, and compliance of automation systems.
This role requires a technically strong leader with deep Delta
V expertise, a strong understanding of manufacturing processes, and the ability to align automation initiatives with operational excellence and digital transformation goals.
Automation Strategy & Standardization
- Execute and advance corporate automation strategy aligned with business and manufacturing objectives
- Maintain and enforce technical standards for control system design, instrumentation, programming, architecture, and cybersecurity
- Benchmark existing systems against industry best practices to identify improvement opportunities
- Lead technical forums to drive collaboration and standardization across sites
- Oversee design, configuration, programming, testing, and commissioning of control systems for major capital projects
- Develop and manage the corporate automation capital plan (typical projects $25K–$2M+)
- Provide final technical approval for automation‑related Capital Expenditure Requests (CERs)
- Ensure projects meet scope, schedule, budget, quality, and safety expectations
- Manage automation vendors, system integrators, and contractors
- Lead implementation of S88‑compliant batch control systems
- Direct control loop optimization, alarm rationalization, and advanced regulatory control strategies
- Oversee instrumentation, control valve, and network hardware selection
- Develop scalable, secure, and reliable system architectures
- Manage control system lifecycle planning, upgrades, and obsolescence strategies
- Oversee integration and utilization of AVEVA PI System (data historian) across all sites
- Support development of dashboards, reporting tools, and analytics to improve operations and quality
- Evaluate and implement emerging technologies such as advanced process control, machine learning, and AI tools
- Ensure all automation systems comply with PSM, OSHA, EPA, NFPA, and applicable regulations
Participate in HAZOP and LOPA reviews - Champion safety‑in‑design principles
- Contribute to Operational Technology (OT) cybersecurity strategy including network segmentation, access control, patch management, and incident response planning
