The Chief Academic Officer provides leadership and strategic oversight in the development, coordination, articulation, and evaluation of curriculum, instruction, professional development and assessment. The CAO serves as a member of the superintendent's cabinet and assists with development of the strategic plan and alignment of board policies with respect to the instructional framework and pedagogical approach to academic programs that directly support the achievement of all students.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Assure that the district's academic philosophy, values, and mission are carried out in a manner that is conducive to innovation, positive thinking, accountability, and performance; assist in the development, organization, and delivery of all curricular and instructional programs and services to ensure they are based on best practices and aligned with district and state standards and assessments.
Supervise curriculum, instruction, and professional development to improve school achievement.
Work collaboratively with principals to analyze student performance data, accountability indicators, and instructional practices, and to design and monitor targeted improvement strategies at the school and district levels.
Supervise federal funding and ensure compliance with related regulations.
Oversee the coordination of all student assessment (formative and summative) and disaggregate data to share with all relevant stakeholders.
Ensure the accurate and timely availability and collection of data through technical training, individual consultation, presentations and technical reports.
Provide vision and strategic direction for the district's curriculum, instruction, and school improvement initiatives, aligned with the long-term strategy to improve student achievement and narrow the achievement gap within and between sub-groups.
Reduce the variability in curricula, instruction, and assessment and implement a vertically aligned curriculum and assessment system and consistent delivery of instruction aligned with key standards (i.e. classroom-to-classroom, grade-by-grade, school-by-school).
Build and lead a highly effective, innovative academic services department including re-envisioning current team roles and responsibilities as necessary.
Plan and recommend an instructional budget (General & Federal budgets) including personnel requirements, program expenses, and capital needs necessary to support a world-class learning environment.
Maintain budgets, expenditures, and related financial activities for the purpose of ensuring that allocations are accurate, revenues are recorded, expenses are within budget limits and/or fiscal practices are followed.
Assist in the selection, training, development, and management of principals, teachers and professional staff.
Oversee the coordination, organization, and maintenance of all aspects of the teacher observation process including training for employees, paperwork, electronic record-keeping, etc.
Establish extensive training programs for teachers and administrators based on best practices, standards for effective instruction, assessment, and PLCs to prepare them for instructional leadership.
Support and equip principals to be instructional leaders for their faculties.
Visit schools to assist the administration with issues related to curriculum and accountability.
Prepare a wide variety of written materials in both electronic and manual formats (e.g. presentations, reports, assessment results, correspondence, internal audits, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.
Attend school board meetings and provide reports to the Board of Education as directed by the Director of Schools.
Perform such other duties as may be assigned by the Director of Schools.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's Degree with an endorsement in Educational Administration and Supervision or related field.
A valid Administrator License.
A minimum of ten (10) years of successful supervisory/administration/management experience in a school-based or central-office based experience. Must include at least five (5) years as a school building administrator.
A minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching experience.
Strong secondary experience preferred.
Progressive education experience including, but not limited to, classroom teaching, assistant principal or school principal, and other education leadership roles.
Progressive responsibility in leading and managing diverse work teams.
