Position: Public Works Field Technician I (Water and Wastewater)

Summary of Position

Sign‑on incentive program: $2,000 sign‑on incentive upon hire.
Under general supervision, the purpose of the job is to perform routine maintenance and operational activities associated with the City’s water and wastewater systems.

Essential Functions
  • Perform manual and semi‑skilled labor tasks related to the water distribution system such as repair water main breaks and leaks, replace or install water meters, repair or replace fire hydrants, flush fire hydrants, operate valves, make water taps, and install water service lines.
  • Replace broken or missing meter lids and boxes, perform re‑reads and meter reading.
  • Cut out streets and driveways; manually excavate, backfill and compact excavated areas to facilitate repairs.
  • Clean sewer lines and respond to sewer issues within the collection system.
  • Locate utilities on the job; dig utilities by hand for machine.
  • Perform simple measurements; interpret gauge and meter readings; carry out routine safety inspections.
  • Transport materials, tools and equipment to and from job sites; set up and remove warning signs and traffic control devices.
  • Operate and service equipment such as jetter truck and hydro‑excavation machinery; operate light vehicles, machinery and power tools.
  • Assist with cleaning and upkeep of vehicles and maintain a checklist; clean work area.
  • Interact professionally and respectfully with the public, coworkers and others in the course of daily work.
  • Maintain regular and timely attendance.
  • Perform on‑call duties and respond to natural disasters, emergencies or critical incidents outside normally scheduled work hours as directed by City Administration.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Valid State of Texas Driver’s License.
  • Class B CDL with required endorsements, or CDL permit, or obtain license and endorsements within six (6) months of hire.
