Responsibilities- Follow all health, safety, and environmental requirements; perform cleanup duties; perform material handling and storage duties.
- Identify, use, and care of common hand and power tools; use and care of craft specific tools and equipment.
- Knowledge and application of craft related mathematics; knowledge and use of safety standards and best safety practices relevant to rigging, inspection of rigging equipment and hardware.
- Knowledge and application of common hitches, emergency stop signal, basic crane hand signals, knot tying (bowline & clove hitch), and use of rigging equipment relevant to craft specific tasks.
- Operate roller machine to compact materials such as soil, gravel, asphalt or concrete in road and foundation construction.
- Read grade stakes and work with grade checker, laser, GPS and supervisor to maintain grade.
- Ensure smoothness to graded/rolled subgrade, sub-base, etc.; drive machine in successive passes over surfaces to be compacted, determining compaction and smoothness of the surface.
- Determine speed and direction of the machine based on knowledge of compressibility of material under changing temperatures.
- Distribute, break down, compress, and give a finished surface to soils, sub-grades, cooling asphalt, etc.; coordinate machine actions with other activities, positioning and moving the machine in response to hand or audio signals from crew members.
- Communicate with paving crew & supervisor on job density requirements.
- Daily maintenance of fluids, inspection of roller and other used equipment; monitor rolling temperature and work within the temperature best suited for material being laid.
- Determine drum rolling mode(s); establish rolling pattern and determine paving width, roller drum width, drum overlap, and paver speed.
- Work with density technician as required to ensure density requirements are met.
- Work with paving crews with hand rolling, wacker work, manholes and catch basins; help trim edge lines in paving with asphalt material.
- Understand proper techniques for rolling transverse joints; recognize flow lines and inverts; strive to minimize roller marks.
- All other duties as assigned.
- Understand and carry out oral instructions; read and carry out written instructions to perform work tasks.
- Work at varying heights; recognize, avoid, and report safety hazards; assemble and disassemble objects.
- Operate equipment and power tools.
- See hazards, safety warnings, and barriers; bend knees for lifting and routine work tasks; stoop for work positioning and lifting to perform work tasks.
- Lift maximum 50 lbs without assistance.
- Ability to comprehend, and respond to audible/visual instructions, alarms and warnings.
- Climb/balance on ladders, scaffolding, and structures for work tasks; kneel for work positioning and work task performance.
- Reach above shoulders and away from body to perform work tasks; demonstrate manual dexterity to perform work tasks.
- Work in extreme heat or cold; work where noise level is above 85 decibels.
- Work in wet/humid environment; work in cramped quarters; work in environments of fluctuating ventilation; work inside and outside.
