• Instructs mothers on all tasks necessary to initiate and maintain lactation during the infant’s hospitalization; may include prenatal instruction and post-discharge follow-up
• Evaluates breastfeeding oral motor mechanics of infants and milk transfer making appropriate recommendations and management strategies
• Documents observations, assessments and recommendations made during consultation in patient record
• Performs all tasks necessary to ensure the mother’s adherence to quality control departmental policies related to milk collection, storage and transport
• Obtains information on maternal medication use and evaluates its compatibility or prohibitive status related to breastfeeding or expressed breast milk feeding
• Attends continuing education Workshops, seminars and in-services and fulfills all mandatory education requirements as documented on staff development roster
• Attends staff meetings and/or reads minutes 90% of the time to keep abreast of current information as documented in meeting sign‑in sheets
• Participates in Hospital Performance Improvement activities, offers written or verbal recommendations and participates in development of team goals on a yearly basis

• Associate Degree, Nursing
• Two years lactation experience
• Registered Nurse;
  Lactation Consultant (IBCLC); BLS, NRP
