Community Assistant (Student Position)

Base pay range: $15.00/hr - $15.00/hr.

Reports to:

Assistant Director of Resident Services.

Location:

South Campus Commons at University of Maryland.

FLSA Status:
Non-Exempt Student.

Summary

The Community Assistant works to support South Campus Commons Service Desks and serves as the first point of contact for residents. As a member of the South Campus Commons staff, the Community Assistant (CA) is responsible for establishing and maintaining a positive and welcoming environment for all students. The Community Assistant reports to the Manager of Resident Services.

Essential Duties / Responsibilities / Expectations
  • Assist with opening/closing of the facilities at the beginning/end of each semester.
  • Be present to work assigned desk shifts as scheduled.
  • Provide office coverage over holidays, semester breaks, exam periods, when buildings are open (including Holidays and Spring Break).
  • Answer phones professionally and transfer to the appropriate individuals.
  • Log in/out resident packages.
  • Conduct resident package audits.
  • Fill out shift audit form at the end of every shift.
  • Ensure loan keys and swipes are being returned in a timely fashion by residents.
  • Conduct key audits.
  • Complete various clerical responsibilities such as database entry, copying/scanning, collating, typing, labeling, and filing.
  • Maintain confidentiality in all matters concerning student/staff discipline and any other matters.
  • Adhere to employment schedule and dress code.
  • Enforce policies / procedures of the residence halls and the university (including campus, state and federal regulations).
  • Act as a referral agent to residents/students regarding information on South Campus Commons and UMD services.
  • Provide excellent customer service on phone and in-person.
  • Participate in other duties as assigned.
Time Commitments
  • Be available to work during opening/closing of the facilities at the beginning/end of each semester.
  • Work assigned desk shifts as scheduled.
  • Be available to work during semester breaks, exam periods, when buildings are open (including Holidays and Spring Break).
  • Work at least three (3) shifts each week at assigned desk.
  • Work one (1) or two (2) weekends per month depending on schedule needs.
  • Work one (1) or two (2) of the following shifts per week (12 midnight–3 am or 3 am–6 am).
  • Work at least one (1) break session per year:
    Thanksgiving, Winter, Spring, Summer.
  • Available to assist during special events as needed. During August check‑in week, increased hours/coverage is needed.
  • Attend and participate in all staff training sessions.
  • Attend monthly Community Assistant meeting to discuss updates and policies.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma.
  • Semester and cumulative GPA of 2.6 or higher.
  • Full‑time enrollment as a degree‑seeking student at the University of Maryland.
  • Be available to serve on the staff for an academic calendar year; re‑employment for the next academic year is contingent upon performance.
  • Be available for a minimum of three (3) shifts a week (stipulations mentioned above).
  • Abide by and uphold all UMD Code of Conduct policies.
  • Maintain good standing with UMD in conduct, academics, and behavior.
  • Possess organizational and time‑management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative as appropriate.
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Possess customer service skills.

Employment period: through May 18, 2026 (summer break work will be determined in advance with Desk Operations Supervisor).

The work environment is mid‑to‑high paced. The noise level is usually moderate.

The physical demands of this role include stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee occasionally must sit and lift or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.
