The Director of Security & Emergency Management Services provides strategic and operational leadership for the safety, security, and emergency preparedness of Kootenai Health’s patients, visitors, staff, physicians, and assets. This role is responsible for developing and sustaining a comprehensive security and emergency management program that ensures a safe, welcoming, and resilient healthcare environment. The Director serves as the organization’s subject matter expert on healthcare security, workplace violence prevention, emergency preparedness, and incident command, while maintaining a highly visible presence across the campus to reinforce Kootenai Health’s commitment to safety and trust.
Responsibilities- Develops, implements, and continuously improves an integrated security and emergency management strategy aligned with Kootenai Health’s mission, values, and strategic priorities
- Establishes short and long-term plans that proactively address workplace violence prevention, physical security, emergency preparedness, and regulatory compliance
- Serves as a trusted advisor to executive leadership on safety, security risk, and organizational readiness
- Provides oversight of all security operations, including access control, patrols, investigations, deescalation response, and coordination with clinical and support services
- Promotes a culture of safety through high visibility, approachability, and collaboration with frontline staff, leaders, and physicians
- Leads initiatives that enhance staff and patient perceptions of safety and security across all facilities including violence prevention training
- Oversees threat assessment and management processes, including workplace violence prevention programs
- Directs the organization’s emergency management program in accordance with regulatory agencies, CMS, FEMA, and state requirements
- Serves as, or oversees, the Hospital Incident Command System (HICS) structure, including planning, training, drills, and real-world activations
- Oversees coordination of emergency preparedness activities with local, regional, and state partners (law enforcement, EMS, public health, emergency management)
- Oversees Kootenai Health’s emergency preparedness, response, recovery and compliance with regulatory standards, and ensures after-action reviews are conducted and improvement plans are implemented following drills and actual events
- Manages teams, budgets, and multi-site operations
- Serves as the primary liaison with law enforcement, emergency responders, and external agencies
- Communicates clearly and effectively during both routine operations and high-stress incidents
- Provides regular reports and insights to executive leadership regarding safety trends, risks, and performance metrics
- Develops and enforces security procedures and regulations
- Acts as a liaison to all departments on security measures, procedures, and needs
- Leads security and/or emergency preparedness programs in a complex, highly regulated environment
- Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
- Regular and predictable attendance is an essential job function
- Performs other related duties as assigned
- Competent to meet age-specific needs of the unit assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree with a major coursework in Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Security or a closely related field, or 5 years’ experience in supervisory level responsibilities in a health care environment required;
Masters preferred - 5 years’ experience in industrial base security and health care environment experience strongly preferred and will be considered first
- Demonstrated skills in crisis intervention skills in a health care environment
- Possession of a valid motor vehicle license and willingness to operate motor vehicles in the course of employment
- Demonstrated knowledge of regulatory standards
- Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator (CHPA) preferred
- Certified Emergency Manager (CEM) preferred
- FEMA IC with IS-100, IS-200, IS-300, IS-400, IS-700, and IS-800 required or obtained within 1 year of employment
- Must be able to maintain a standing and/or sitting position
- Typical equipment used in a clinical and office job
- Must be able to stoop, crouch or bend
- Must be able to push, pull, or transport heavy equipment
