Trauma Nurse Lead Internal Only Department Only

Position Summary

Under general direction of the trauma program manager in collaboration with the emergency department manager, provides immediate care and ongoing follow-up for the injured patient in a setting of collaborative and multidisciplinary practice. Provides clinical support through all phases of care for the traumatically injured patient during initial trauma resuscitation to ED disposition, serving as an essential link between patients and all other clinical and medical staff.

Participates in the trauma performance improvement and patient safety (PIPS) program, evaluating issues, assisting with loop closure, enhancing clinical outcomes, and promotes goals and objectives of the trauma center.

Responsibilities
  • Immediately available to the emergency department while on shift to provide direct care for traumatically injured patients
  • Ensures rapid, coordinated movement of the patient through all phases of initial care to disposition in coordination with the trauma resuscitation team utilizing Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) principles
  • Communicates with trauma surgeon and/or emergency department provider prior to injured patient arrival in collaboration with the emergency department charge nurse
  • Assures all necessary team members are present for resuscitation
  • Controls care of the trauma patient under the direction of the trauma surgeon and/or emergency department provider
  • Responsible for real-time trauma resuscitation documentation including personnel, interventions, treatments and timeline of care
  • Communicates with the house supervisor, trauma program manager, emergency department charge nurse, critical care charge nurse, and rapid response when there are multiple traumas
  • Serves as a resource to patients, families, nursing, ancillary services, physicians and others to provide optimal care to the injured patient
  • Responsible for issue identification, validation, analyses, and initiates follow-up to assure loop closure that will improve clinical outcomes and patient care
  • Serves as house wide resource for education and ongoing support specific to injured patients
  • Acts as primary preceptor for trauma department
  • Demonstrates ability to adapt model of care delivery to resources available
  • Assists with trauma related performance improvement projects and education to improve outcomes and quality of injured patient care
  • Participates in trauma performance improvement committees
  • Supports administrative, outreach, injury prevention, and research initiatives
  • Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the field
  • Regular and predictable attendance is an essential job function
  • Competent to meet age specific needs of the unit assigned
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
Requirements and

Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduate of a nationally accredited Nursing program required
  • State of Idaho Registered Nurse or licensure pending as documented by temporary licensure OR current RN licensure from a state participating in the "multistate privilege to practice" compact with Idaho
  • Licensed RN with a minimum 3 years’ patient-facing RN experience at time of hire, ADN or diploma required; BSN or higher preferred
  • All non-BSN RN's with less than 3 years’ patient-facing RN experience at time of hire are required to be enrolled in a baccalaureate (or higher) degree program in nursing within 1 year of employment, with completion within 3 years of hire
  • Minimum 1 year clinical experience in emergency, trauma, or critical care required; 2 years’ emergency, trauma or critical care experience in an American College of Surgeons verified level II trauma center preferred
  • Prior charge nurse or leadership experience preferred
  • Kootenai Health approved professional certification to demonstrate clinical expertise strongly preferred within 6 months of hire, preferably CEN, TCRN and/or CCRN
  • Kootenai Health leadership development program as designated by trauma program manager
  • BLS required
  • ACLS required
  • PALS required
  • Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course (ENPC) required
