Description

To lead and perform a variety of complex networking functions to maintain the Department‑wide computer systems and related equipment; and perform a variety of analytical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This position requires completion of a thorough testing process.
BEFORE applying, you MUST  for Senior Network Systems Analyst‑Data Communications 06‑068 for complete testing details. This is the advanced journey level class in the Network Systems Analyst series. Positions at this level are distinguished from other classes within the series by the level of responsibility assumed, the complexity of duties assigned and the lead worker functions required of the class. It is distinguished from Network Systems Analyst II in that this level provides a broader range of technical expertise requiring more extensive and thorough knowledge of network engineering, networking and operating systems.

Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to the assigned area of responsibility.

Supervision Received and Exercised

Receives direction from the Information Technologies Manager – Network Systems or designee. Exercises functional and technical supervision over lower level Network Systems Analysts.

Minimum Qualifications

Four years of increasingly responsible experience installing and maintaining wide and/or local area network systems, including hardware, network operating system software, user application software, and project management.

Training/Education

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in computer science, management information systems, information technology or closely related field or equivalent training, education and/or experience.

Licenses and Certifications

Possession of or ability to obtain a Nevada driver’s license.

Desirable Certifications

Those certifications obtained through the Microsoft Certified Professional Program, Novell Professional Certification program, Cisco Internetworking Certification Program, or American Management Association, or any other approved information technology certification.

Essential Functions
  • Lead, plan, train, and review the work of staff responsible for the area of work assigned
  • Perform a variety of complex networking functions, including designing, analyzing, evaluating, capacity planning, procuring, installing, configuring, testing, maintaining and/or documenting the Department‑wide computer network systems and related equipment, including network hardware, software, and communication and connectivity devices in accordance with established procedures and security needs
  • Perform project management functions, including coordinating all resources assigned to a project, developing project plans, scheduling, defining tasks, assigning resources, performing technical evaluations, and leading project personnel
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex hardware and software problems on routers, switches, file servers, personal computers and peripherals, using a variety of specialized diagnostic tools and equipment, as needed
  • Identify, develop, test and implement network security authentication
  • Assist telecommunications vendors to design, maintain, and troubleshoot copper and fiber optic cabling and equipment
  • Participate in the development, review and approval of Information Technologies related contracts
  • Coordinate upgrades to existing computer communications, file servers, and other network equipment and software to prevent obsolescence
  • Capacity plan, coordinate, and implement wide‑area network connectivity, as needed
  • Stage and configure equipment, as required, for integration into the network, including routers, switches and servers
  • Create and maintain logical, physical and protocol maps and electronic and hard copy back‑ups of all equipment configuration parameters and network documentation standards and procedures
  • Provide technical advice to other technical staff and Department members
  • Identify, plan, and implement disaster planning and data recovery, including file backup, restoration, and disk imaging
