Purpose Statement

The job of Special Education Para educator is done for the purpose/s of assisting, tutoring, and training special education and other identified students with significant disabilities in a classroom or similar learning situation; providing personal care assistance; and performing classroom clerical tasks in support of the instructional process.

Special Education Para educator

This job reports to Building Principal.

Salary Range: $18.90 - $32.90

Essential Functions
  • Administers assessments in small groups or one-on-one in a separate testing area for the purpose of accommodating student needs.
  • Assists other personnel, as may be required, for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.
  • Assists students with disabilities, under the general direction of the regular classroom or special education teacher, (e.g. explain words, read to students, assist with developing motor skills, monitor individual assignments, take class notes, scribe, restate information, teach life skills and hygiene, etc.) for the purpose of allowing them to participate in classroom activities and make progress toward IEP goals with access to the general curriculum, as appropriate.
  • Attends meetings as requested (e.g. inservice training, workshops, IEPs, etc.) for the purpose of obtaining skills and/or conveying information regarding student needs.
  • Collaborates with teachers and other instructional assistants for the purpose of providing efficient, necessary and appropriate assistance to students.
  • Confers with teacher/s (special education and/or regular classroom) and case managers for the purpose of assisting in evaluating student progress and/or implementing IEP services.
  • Maintains instructional materials and/or student files/records (e.g. workbooks, worksheets, assignments, portfolios, Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP), etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of items and/or providing reliable information.
  • Modifies instructional materials or provides accommodations, under the direction of a teacher or Case Manager, in accordance with student's IEP for the purpose of assisting and supporting students with disabilities in making progress toward IEP goals and having access to the general curriculum, as appropriate.
  • Monitors students (e.g. library, field trips, classroom activities, lunch room, bus, playground, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring a safe and positive environment while providing access to academic and non-academic activities.
  • Records observations and incidents relating to specific students for the purpose of providing documentation and/or communicating information to appropriate personnel.
  • Responds to inquiries from staff (e.g. administrators, psychologists, teachers, counselors, staff, etc.) for the purpose of providing information, direction and/or appropriate referrals.
  • Supports the implementation of (BIP) for the purpose of providing interventions and support to meet the educational and emotional needs of each student, collecting data regarding the effect of interventions.
Other Functions
  • Assists other personnel, as may be required, for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.
Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

SKILLS:

operating standard office equipment; preparing and maintaining accurate records; adhering to safety practices and procedures; and administering basic first aid.

KNOWLEDGE: basic math; understanding of written procedures, ability to write routine documents, and to speak clearly; and understanding of multi-step written and oral instructions. Includes knowledge of age-appropriate activities; P.A.W.D. training; subject matter taught in assigned classrooms; stages of child development; concepts of grammar, spelling and punctuation; cultural differences of student population; health standards and hazards; and recordkeeping and record retention practices.

ABILITY: scheduling activities, meetings, and/or events; gathering and collating data; making decisions with equipment; flexibility to work with others; problem solving; and other competency requirements such as communicating with diverse groups, maintaining confidentiality, exhibiting patience and compassion, working with frequent interruptions, adapting to changing work priorities, organizing tasks, setting priorities, and working as part of a team.
