• minimum of 1 year of experience within the last 36 months (3 yrs) as a recreational therapist
• ability to build rapport with patients
• compassionate and caring demeanor
• familiarity with medical terminology
• a valid and current cpr card (american heart association)

certificates accepted from the national council for theraputic certificaton (nctrc) or the california board of recreation and park certification (cbrpc)

• assess patient needs
• consider medical records
• personal observation and talks with the patient and his or her loved ones
• execute a therapeutic program targeted toward what that patient requires most
• keep current on communal and therapeutic resources available to best help the patients
• document a patient's progress during their activities
• other duties assigned by supervisor
