In order to join our Talent Bank, you are required to pass our Trainee Train Driver assessment centre, and your details will be held for a maximum of 2 years from the date you successfully complete our recruitment process. Not your average role….

As a Train Driver with Scot Rail, you could be travelling along some of the most scenic rail routes in the world, doing the important job of transporting and connecting the people of Scotland. Our Train Drivers are at the heart of Scot Rail, making sure our customers get to where they need to be safely, comfortably and on time. Our customers also have busy lives, so we need to be there for them when they need us;

from the early hours of the morning until late at night, seven days a week.

Driving a train comes with a lot of responsibility and being able to work alone, concentrate for long periods of time and following strict protocol are essential. It’s also a very rewarding job – our Drivers play a key role in building the future of Scotland’s Railway with their professionalism, excellent customer service skills and dedication to ensuring their services run safely and on time.

As a Trainee Train Driver with Scot Rail, you will participate in our 12 - 18 month training programme which is a blended-learning approach including both classroom and practical learning via our Training Academy and on-the-job training with a Driver Instructor. Our training programme will equip you with the necessary skills, experience and knowledge to become a first-class Train Driver.

To become a Trainee Train Driver with Scot Rail you need to demonstrate the following:

• Good Time Management – Scot Rail’s customers rely on our trains to be on time every time so our Drivers can’t be late for their shift.
• Excellent Communication – the ability to engage with a variety of stakeholders including customers and articulate technical language within time-sensitive environments.
• Problem-solving – a proactive approach with the ability to adapt to different situations and provide solutions whilst adhering to policy and procedure.
• Resilience – the ability to work autonomously for long-periods of time and take accountability to make decisions within a time sensitive environment.
• Initiative – the ability to work effectively on your own and respond to different challenges throughout the working day.

Please note – in adherence with regulatory guidelines, Trainee Train Drivers need to be a minimum of 20 years old at the time of commencing their training.

During your training your salary will be £36,032 per annum and will increase at each of the following stages:

• Newly Qualified Driver – £50,086 per annum
• 6 months post qualification – £53,493 per annum
• 9 months post qualification – £57,451 per annum
• Driver – £63,421 per annum
