Job Summary:
This is a civilian position designed to augment the certified officers in the performance of their duties as well as taking on some of the duties that do not require a certified officer to perform. Report taking that would not have investigative value, traffic control at incidents as well as community events, escort duties, parking complaints and related work as required.
This position has been classified as a safety sensitive position and is subject to our drug testing policy to include pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion and post-accident for the following prohibited substances: marijuana, amphetamines, opioids, phencyclidine (PCP), and cocaine, as well as any drug not approved for medical use by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Responsibilities- The principal function of an employee in this class is to assist the certified officers in their duties, respond to calls for non-criminal investigations and to perform other assigned non-enforcement type duties.
- Duties normally consist of patrol and traffic activities in the city on an assigned shift.
- Officers may be delegated to assignments in specialized areas such as neighborhood services, community services, criminal investigations services, administration, or other assignment.
- Work is performed under the general direction of a supervising Sergeant.
- Considerable latitude is granted to the employee but work is subject to periodic performance audits and annual evaluations.
- The principal duties of this class are performed in both a general office environment and an outdoor environment that may include exposure to adverse weather conditions and to potential personal danger.
- Patrols assigned areas of the city in a car or on foot.
- Enforces non-criminal ordinances.
- Maintains community presence and/or responds to calls for service and takes appropriate action.
- Responds to calls related to the protection of life and property, traffic incidents, and other public safety emergencies.
- Responds to patrol calls to assist the certified officer in a non-enforcement role which include, burglaries, health and welfare assists, thefts, traffic accidents, hazardous material spills, and other public and life safety incidents.
- Prepares reports of activities performed, and unusual incidents observed.
- Completes reports and other related documents in a timely manner.
- Conducts preliminary investigations and records information at vehicle accidents, other than crashes with injuries or fatality.
- Verbally interacts with witnesses and victims to obtain information.
- Performs self-initiated patrol consisting of patrolling high crime areas of the city, areas of parking violations, and other relevant activities.
- Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City and Department policies, procedures and safety practices.
Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application. High school diploma or GED equivalency; and successful completion of CPD In-House & Field Training (FTO); and some experience in law enforcement or college level course work in criminal justice or other law enforcement field preferred, but not required; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
SpecialQualifications
- Valid Motor Vehicle Driver’s License, equivalent to a Class “D” New Mexico driver’s license.
- Must not have been convicted of a felony, domestic violence, or other crime involving moral turpitude.
