Medical Assistant
As a Medical Assistant at PHC you will support the delivery of healthcare by providing clinical care and administrative support as delegated by licensed clinical staff. You will work in accordance with standard and scope established by PHC policies and procedures and will performs work with special consideration for patient safety and infection control policies and procedures. You will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to welcome patients to a safe and inclusive environment and to engage patients in holistic care.
In this position, you will be based at West Side Clinic and will regularly float to PHC medical clinics in Des Moines, Ames, and Marshalltown as needed. This role is scheduled Monday - Friday 8 AM - 5 PM. You will occasionally be asked to work evenings until 8 PM and may work one Saturday per month 9 AM - 1 PM at East Side Clinic.
This position is eligible for a $0.50 per hour float pay supplement and a $5.00 per hour shift differential is applied when working a 3-hour shift either on a Saturday or after 5 PM on a weekday. You will be eligible for mileage reimbursement for miles driven to work sites minus your normal daily work commute from your home to the home location for this position.
- Collaborates with assigned Patient Care Team and others to provide needed healthcare to patients in a clinic setting. Performs assigned workflows efficiently and effectively.
- Prepares for exam/procedure and assists provider as requested. Facilitates the patient rooming and intake process and obtains accurate patient vital signs per established workflow.
- Documents patient care accurately and timely in the electronic health record. Completes timely prior authorizations and referrals per established guidelines.
- Performs point-of-care testing per CLIA guidelines and other established workflows. Ensures service orders are completed timely. Administers medications, immunizations, and treatments per written or standing orders.
- Provides patient education appropriate to the patient’s age and identified learning needs.
- Completes and accurately documents quality controls per established process. Performs pre-cleaning and transport of contaminated instruments per infection control policies and procedures. Routinely evaluates supply levels in exam rooms, removing expired supplies and restocking as appropriate.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One year of experience in a medical assistant, patient care technician, certified nurse assistant, phlebotomy, or related clinical position or completion of medical assisting program from an accredited institution.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal, teamwork and collaboration skills with ability for a team approach to care plus develop and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of individuals.
- Organization and priority skills with detail orientation.
- Professional skills with ability to remain composed in all situations and show empathy.
- Basic computer skills with proficiency using Microsoft Office applications and electronic health record system.

Certifications:
Current Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers*; current Mandatory Reporter approved for the State of Iowa*.
* Must be obtained with Introductory Period if not current.
Preferred
- Effective Medical Assistant skills with ability to utilize universal precautions in patient care.
- Work experience in a community health center or medical clinic.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills in Spanish.

Current Medical Assistant Certification or Registration issued by AAMA, AMT, NCCT or NHA
Your experience and skills determine your base pay. The typical hiring range for this position is $18.65 - 23.32 per hour. Candidates with extensive related experience may be considered for additional compensation up to the pay range maximum.
