Purpose of PositionUnder limited supervision, this position is responsible for overseeing the maintenance and operations of assigned parks and recreational facilities to ensure they are safe, clean, and compliant with all applicable regulations and standards. The incumbent ensures facilities are ready for public use, performing and supervising general maintenance and upkeep of buildings, grounds, and structures. This role requires adherence to internal policies and external legal requirements and may include after-hours on-call duties, emergency responses, or standby shifts as needed.
This is a full-time position that reports directly to the Parks and Recreation Division Manager or their designee.
The following duties are illustrative of the various types of work that may be performed. This list is not exhaustive and employees may perform other related duties as assigned.
- Inspect city parks and facilities for safety hazards; promptly mitigate potential dangers and perform maintenance or repairs as needed.
- Maintain and repair park equipment, benches, picnic tables, trash receptacles, grills, and other amenities.
- Perform general groundskeeping such as mowing, edging, weeding, pruning, brush removal, and debris cleanup in parks and rights-of-way.
- Apply herbicides and pesticides in compliance with regulations.
- Complete all work in accordance with safety procedures, regulations, and quality standards.
- Maintain tools, vehicles, and equipment such as dump trucks, mowers, tractors, sprayers, weed eaters, and trimmers.
- Participate in tree planting, pruning, watering, and removal as part of the City’s urban forestry program.
- Prepare daily work logs and reports as required.
- Assist other departments as needed and support setup, takedown, and general duties for City events and festivals.
- Operate within all established working, personnel, ethical, and safety policies and regulations.
- High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of six months of experience in parks and recreation, maintenance, equipment operation, or a related field; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid South Carolina driver’s license with a clean driving record.
