TITLE: MSI JROTC Instructor

REPORTS TO: Principal

LENGTH OF CONTRACT OR WORK YEAR: 11 months

POSITION

DESCRIPTION:

The Maritime Science Instructor (MSI) for the Coast Guard JROTC (CGJROTC) will serve as the instructional leader who oversees the CGJROTC unit at Clinton High School. The MSI will instruct and supervise participating student cadets in the subject areas of leadership, citizenship, health and wellness, maritime science, Coast Guard missions/operations/history, and related subjects. The MSI will serve as a high‑impact role model to students, instilling citizenship, responsibility, and a deep appreciation for the Coast Guard and our nation.

The MSI will also figure as a prominent and influential leader who successfully facilitates positive relationships amongst the Coast Guard, school, and local community.

Specific

Job Responsibilities
  • Instruct cadets in the JROTC curriculum during the school year. Develop short‑ and long‑range plans for achieving curriculum goals, gather appropriate materials, establish clear objectives for lessons, and formulate appropriate lesson plans.
  • Meet and instruct assigned classes at designated locations and times. Maintain a safe and orderly learning environment.
  • Recruit cadets and provide appropriate counseling to cadets enrolled in JROTC programs. Evaluate student progress and submit necessary government reports on a timely basis.
  • Plan and implement instructional programs that adhere to system‑wide goals and priorities and meet the needs, interests, and abilities of students.
  • Organize, supervise, and participate in extracurricular activities for JROTC cadets to include color guard, drill teams, and other special activities.
  • Maintain knowledge of current professional military standards, including physical fitness requirements.
  • Create an instructional environment that is conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of cadets. Communicate standards, achievements, and deficiencies to students and parents. Meet with students and parents.
  • Maintain complete and accurate student academic, attendance, & disciplinary records. Maintain JROTC student records as required by military service regulations and local policies. Monitor and assess students’ academic progress.
  • Oversee the appropriate use and care of textbooks, instructional materials, uniforms, facilities, & equipment.
  • Collaborate with school administrators, other teachers, para educators, parents, and community members in the education of students. Attend staff meetings. Serve on various committees.
  • Provide accurate information to any interested student about the USCG. Develop & maintain positive working relationships with the local Coast Guard recruiting office and Coast Guard Academy Admissions office to inform cadets about a possible career in the Coast Guard.
  • As a retired senior enlisted member of the USCG, maintain a sharp, professional appearance in uniform and personal grooming in accordance with USCG regulations.
  • Perform such other duties as assigned by administration and Board of Education.
  • Attendance is regular in person.
Minimum Qualifications

Experience and Training

Educational minimum of an associate degree in any focus, or must be obtained within five years of employment.

Retired from the USCG (active or reserve component) at the rank of E‑6 to E‑9 with work experience as an Active Duty or Reserve enlisted member. Those retired from the reserve component must be a gray area reservist who isn’t receiving pay but are retired awaiting pay.

Experience with formal classroom and informal instruction. Between structured classroom lessons, close‑order drills, USCG unit field trips, and providing leadership guidance to students, the incumbent must be familiar and comfortable with various leadership, teaching, and learning styles.
