Under close supervision, performs and trains to perform a variety of police field and administrative support functions prior to employment as a Probationary Police Officer.
- Performs administrative functions in a precinct or specialized police unit. Receives and responds to requests from the public for non-emergency assistance and information. Answers questions and provides advice and consultation to the public.
- Works undercover to investigate crimes and target criminal activities. Provides assistance to police officers in the performance of their duties by directing traffic, inspecting vehicles, and issuing citations and repair orders. Assists with crowd control and special events. Assists police officers in processing and monitoring prisoners.
- Accesses MILES, NCIC, MVA, and other police and criminal justice computer networks to enter, retrieve, review, research, and gather information and perform criminal background checks on subjects.
- Communicates through law enforcement radio channels and through computer networks to provide information to officers, verify warrants, and identify wanted vehicles and people. Composes, sends, and receives teletypes.
- Provides arrest and warrant information to police officers. Investigates complaints, gathers information, and writes reports. Contacts victims, officers, and the public. Arranges for towing of abandoned vehicles. Processes evidence in accordance with regulations. Assists in the disposal of contraband.
- Inspects and maintains equipment, including vehicles, firearms, and clothing. Performs precinct and property inspections. Assists in providing security at police facilities.
- Provides routine office support such as sorting and distributing mail, answering and directing telephone calls, and filing. Performs other related duties as required.

- Applicants must be at least 18, but less than 21 years of age at the time of appointment.
- Possession of a high school diploma or an appropriate equivalent.
- Pass a written examination.
- Pass a physical agility test prior to starting the academy.
- Pass a physical examination prior to starting the academy.
- Pass a comprehensive background investigation, psychological screening, polygraph examination, and a drug test.
- All applicants must be citizens of the United States at the time of appointment.
- Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a noncommercial, class C Maryland driver's license is required at the time of appointment.
- Have less than four points on their driving record.
- Have no felony convictions.
Upon successfully completion of the background investigation and the medical examination, passers of both the written and physical agility tests will be considered for a future class of the Baltimore County Police Academy as they approach the age of 21. The Police Academy is a 33-week academic, physical and practical training program, which introduces recruits to a career in law enforcement.
