Position Summary
Coordinates, leads, and participates in serving food in a district school building to insure that food safety, sanitation, and quality standards are met. Leads and monitors the daily operations of the kitchen by providing leadership to kitchen staff; plans the daily operational activities, ensures food service functions comply with USDA policy, food service department policy, and State of Michigan regulations; orders food items and supplies and maintains proper inventories;
cash out the register drawer and prepare deposit; and responds to parent concerns and questions. Completes daily food production records.
- Lead and serve food to students in compliance with district and state food safety, sanitation, and quality standards.
- Oversee preparation, cooking, setup, and serving of food and beverage items to meet mandated nutritional and health requirements.
- Place orders from the central kitchen for food items and supplies; plan for and insure the following day's needs are accounted for each day.
- Monitor food temperatures and make corrective adjustments as necessary.
- Respond to quality concerns from parents and students and implement corrective actions when necessary.
- Process receipt, stocking, and storage of daily school food orders received from the central kitchen.
- Account for cash and checks received and reconcile daily receipts.
- Serve as a cashier to calculate and account for student and adult sales while ensuring proper meal requirements are met.
- Process and complete required forms and documentation to maintain food production records, purchase orders, food safety records, annual inventory reports, etc.
- Participate in training new employees on proper and safe food handling methods and techniques, monitor and evaluate progress, and provide appropriate feedback and instruction.
- Prepare daily work schedules and provide leadership and supervision over the work of the food service staff.
- Report equipment malfunction for the purpose of maintaining equipment in safe working order.
- Use proper body mechanics and cleaning procedures to prevent accidental injuries to self and others.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- High school diploma or G.E.D. required.
- Two years of related work experience in food service and/or safe food handling required.
- Previous work experience in a leadership role preferred.
- Previous work experience in K-12 food service preferred.
Serv Safe Certification preferred; required to obtain Serv Safe certification within 90 days of hire.
Knowledge- Basic math for counting change, preparing deposits, and reconciling receipts.
- Basic accounting.
- Knowledge of quantity cooking methods, pertinent codes, policies, regulations, and laws; food safety and sanitation requirements.
- Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, equipment, occupational hazards, and safety precautions related to food service.
- Knowledge of proper handling and storage of food.
- Knowledge of proper serving techniques and portion control.
- Knowledge of food conversions.
- Read and interpret district policies, guidelines, handbook, and government regulations.
- Read and comprehend safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Lead and train food service staff.
- Write simple correspondence.
- Handle cash and complete records requiring basic math and accounting skills.
- Participate and complete state of Michigan required professional development and obtain certification.
- Communicate effectively in English, verbally and in writing, with students, and school administrators and staff.
- Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Solve practical problems involving several concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Use basic computer software applications effectively.
- Handle general clean up duties.
