This is a Career Service position as a Senior Public Health Nutritionist with the Department of Health in Hendry and Glades Counties (FDOH
- Hendry and Glades). The incumbent is responsible for administering and coordinating activities related to breastfeeding support, education and promotion consistent with state and federal regulations (DHM 150-24). The incumbent is expected to collaborate with community partners and programs within the Florida Department of Health. Employee plans and provides comprehensive nutrition care and education services within the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) in health clinics and other community settings.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Public Health Nutritionist Program Director. The incumbent is expected to work with a high degree of independence and must be relied upon to maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA guidelines, while providing excellent customer service. This position reports to the Public Health Nutritionist Program Director and is headquartered in Clewiston.
Determines nutrition risk eligibility of clients in accordance with DHM 150-24. Provides individual nutrition education contacts, adapts nutrition education content based on client needs using the VENA concept to provide appropriate nutritional counseling. Documents services in accordance with State WIC Office documentation guidelines. Correctly identifies high-risk clients and completes an individual high-risk/medical high-risk care plan using the SOAP format. Refers clients to appropriate outside agencies as needed, documenting referrals.
Assigns appropriate food packages. May conduct group nutrition education classes. Enters data in the FL-WiSE system and ensures all required screens are completed before end of day. Performs anthropometric measurements and hematological testing for WIC clients following DHM 150-24 rules and regulations. Determines client eligibility. Provides interactive newsletter contact. Adheres to all WIC regulations, policies and procedures set forth in DHM 150-24.
Performs duties as the WIC Breastfeeding Coordinator. Obtains and maintains credentials as a CLC to be designated as a breastfeeding expert. Serves as a lead contact for breastfeeding support and promotion activities. Refers WIC participants to appropriate WIC staff, community agencies, organizations and/or health care providers. Assists Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Coordinator in recruiting, training, and mentoring WIC Breastfeeding Counselors. Provides breastfeeding outreach services as assigned.
Participates in monthly state Breastfeeding Coordinator conference calls. Assists with organization and maintenance of breastfeeding supplies, including issuing manual breast pumps per Local Agency guidelines. Provides breastfeeding education to all pregnant clients served. Coordinates and tracks prenatal clients; assigns WIC clients to Breastfeeding Peer Counselors; ensures access to timely postpartum breastfeeding support. Conducts group breastfeeding education as needed. When applicable, submits the WIC Breastfeeding Award of Excellence Application and strives to qualify for the award.
Monitors WIC staff documentation for clients issued breastfeeding equipment. Provides ongoing and annual breastfeeding training for local WIC staff.
Complies with the mandatory requirements of Section 215.422, Florida Statutes and Chapter 691-24, Florida Administrative Code. Attends staff meetings, trainings and staff development activities. Participates in end-of-month inventory and quarterly WIC Quality Assurance monitoring. Completes administrative forms (timesheets, employee activity reports, travel forms) accurately and promptly.
