The Machine Shop Manager oversees the daily operations, safety, and instructional support of the engineering machine shop and associated laboratories. This position plays a key role in supporting Lee University’s engineering program by maintaining a safe, organized, and mission‑aligned environment that enables effective teaching, learning, and discovery. The Machine Shop Manager collaborates closely with faculty, students, and staff to support instructional labs, student projects, faculty research, and institutional fabrication needs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Oversee daily operations of the engineering machine shop and associated laboratories
- Develop and deliver safety training and equipment‑use instruction
- Maintain, repair, and perform preventive maintenance on shop equipment
- Supervise and train student workers in shop procedures and safety compliance
- Support instructional laboratories, senior design teams, student projects, and faculty research
- Provide fabrication assistance and produce components for institutional use
- Manage inventory, tools, materials, and supplies
- Coordinate vendor service and equipment maintenance contracts
- Maintain safety documentation, equipment logs, and compliance records
- Assist with laboratory setup and administration of access control systems
- Collaborate with faculty, students, and administrative staff to support program development
- Strong knowledge of machining, welding, and fabrication techniques
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively within a Christ‑centered academic community
- Commitment to the Christian mission and values of Lee University
- Associate’s degree in a technical field or equivalent professional experience in machine shop operations, equipment maintenance, and safety compliance
- Experience training and supervising students or staff in a technical environment
- Industry certifications such as NIMS or equivalent are preferred
