A Campus Police Officer I operates under the supervision of the Chief of Campus Police. The officer investigates crimes and accidents, protects property, facilities, citizens, staff, and students, and performs law‑enforcement duties across campus.
Minimum Requirements / Qualifications- High School Diploma or Equivalency.
- Age 18 or older.
- U.S. citizen.
- Certified Police Officer per TCA 38‑8‑107, including completion of a Tennessee Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission‑approved academy within one year of employment.
- Meets TCA 38‑8‑106 qualifications.
- No felony convictions or related charges concerning force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor, or controlled substances.
- No dishonorable discharge from U.S. armed forces.
- Fingerprints on file with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
- Passed a physical examination by a licensed physician.
- Demonstrated good moral character through a thorough investigation.
- Certified by a Tennessee licensed health care provider, qualified in psychology, as free from impairments affecting essential job functions.
- Valid Tennessee operator license issued by the Department of Safety.
- Conduct regular patrols by foot, bicycle, or vehicle to maintain campus visibility and accessibility.
- Direct and control traffic flow on campus, managing intersections and parking areas and ensuring compliance with traffic regulations.
- Monitor traffic and parking compliance, issuing citations as appropriate.
- Respond to campus accidents, assess scenes, gather information, and determine probable causes.
- Document findings thoroughly and pursue appropriate actions, such as filing reports or coordinating with emergency services.
- Investigate reported crimes, collect evidence, interview witnesses, and prepare detailed reports.
- When warranted, make arrests in accordance with legal protocols, ensuring all actions are documented accurately.
- Provide testimony in court or legal proceedings regarding investigations conducted.
- Operate and maintain all assigned law‑enforcement equipment, including radios, vehicles, and other tools essential for duties.
- Achieve additional skill, knowledge, or credential levels required by the Tennessee Board of Regents or SACSCOC.
- Provide backup to various unit functions.
- Serve on college committees and participate in administrative decision‑making at an appropriate level.
- Complete other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
- Knowledge of the court system and evidentiary presentation.
- Familiarity with campus policies, city, county, and state laws.
- Understanding of investigative methods.
- Awareness of the campus geography.
- Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies and determine appropriate action.
- Proficiency in gathering facts through personal contact, observation, and records examination.
- Ability to explain and interpret relevant laws, ordinances, and regulations.
- Capability to enforce laws firmly, tactfully, and respectfully.
