The Department of Emergency Medicine of the Metro Health System, a principal teaching hospital of the Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine, is seeking an Advance Practice Registered Nurse to join our growing Life Flight team.

Delivering direct patient care consistent with the advanced practice registered nurse's education, experience, and certification, in collaboration with a physician, this role includes diagnosis, management, and/or referral of health care issues. The nurse promotes consumer, family, and community health through preventative health care actions and patient advocacy. The advanced practice registered nurse may also manage complex illnesses and/or deliver specialty care, while upholding the mission, vision, values, and customer service standards of The Metro Health System.

Metro Life Flight responsibilities: advanced emergency and critical care patient management during air and ground transport of the critically ill or injured patient from the scene or outlying sites to participating secondary and tertiary care institutions. Responsibilities include providing intensive care monitoring, critical care intervention, advanced surgical skill procedures, and management of high-risk obstetrical, medical, surgical, respiratory, and cardiovascular patients. Specialized training allows care through ventilatory support, continuous cardiac and hemodynamic monitoring, including intra‑aortic balloon pump.

The Flight Nurse Practitioner also maintains flight physiology knowledge and collaborates with the Nurse Manager, Metro Life Flight Professional Practice Committee, and assistant medical directors.

Responsibilities
  • Contribute to patient safety by:
    • Providing a safe environment for patients.
    • Reporting safety concerns, errors, and near misses.
    • Participating in system improvement initiatives to prevent errors.
    • Providing evidence‑based care as applicable to the role.
  • Clinical Practice:
    • Performs patient assessment, documents, and analyzes data relative to specialty based on patient needs, existing signs and symptoms, and current patient data.
    • Utilizes critical thinking in formulating differential diagnosis and establishing priorities in care.
    • Institutes measures to promote and maintain health, prevent illness, maintain comfort, and meet achievable patient and family care preferences.
    • Develops an evidence‑based plan of care for the patient with ongoing management and evaluation of outcomes based upon advanced practitioner’s scope of practice and certification, in collaboration with patient, family, and other pertinent health care providers.
    • Provides care in a manner that enhances patient satisfaction and maintains good public relations.
    • Selects appropriate communication approach to achieve desired outcomes, identifies barriers to communication, initiates appropriate interaction, and evaluates results.
    • Accepts accountability for clinical practice, including making proactive decisions, responding to changing needs, and representing patient needs to others as appropriate.
    • Ensures compliance with all applicable regulatory agencies and laws, national standards, the Metro Health System Code of Ethical Conduct, and the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics.
    • Prescribes drugs and therapeutic devices in accordance with laws and within scope of practice, if holding a Certificate to Prescribe.
    • Understands flight physiology and takes appropriate action regarding patient care.
    • Works collaboratively with the Nurse Manager, Metro Life Flight Professional Practice Committee, and assistant medical directors.
    • Ensures availability via hospital pager for programmatic needs including patient care, specialty transports, and other administrative direction.
    • Performs a pre‑hospital scene survey to ensure safety of patient and crew members and coordinates patient triage in the pre‑hospital environment as needed.
    • Evaluates the care of patients within the scope of flight nurse practitioner using Metro Life Flight protocols, guidelines, and physician collaboration and consultation.
