Department: The Department of Emergency Medicine of the Metro Health System, a principal teaching hospital of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, is seeking an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse to join our Life Flight team. The role involves direct patient care, diagnosis, management and referral of healthcare issues. The provider promotes consumer, family, and community health, manages complex illnesses, and maintains patient advocacy.

The provider is responsible for advanced emergency and critical care patient management during air and ground transport of critically ill or injured patients, providing intensive monitoring and advanced interventional skills. The specialized training includes ventilatory support, continuous cardiac monitoring, and intra‑aortic balloon pump management.

Responsibilities
  • Contribute to patient safety by providing a safe environment, reporting safety concerns, participating in system improvement initiatives, and providing evidence‑based care.
  • Perform patient assessment, document and analyze data related to specialty based on patient needs, existing signs and symptoms, and current patient data.
  • Utilize critical thinking to formulate differential diagnosis and establish priorities in care.
  • Institute measures to promote and maintain health, prevent illness, maintain comfort, and meet patient and family care preferences.
  • Develop individualized, evidence‑based plan of care in collaboration with patient, family, physicians, and other health‑care providers.
  • Provide care that enhances patient satisfaction and promotes good public relations.
  • Select appropriate communication approach, identify barriers, initiate interaction, and evaluate results.
  • Accept accountability for clinical practice, make proactive decisions, respond to changing needs, and represent patient needs to others.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory agencies, national standards, Metro Health Code of Ethical Conduct, and ANA Code of Ethics.
  • Prescribe drugs and therapeutic devices within scope of practice and laws, if holding prescription authority.
  • Understand flight physiology and take appropriate actions regarding patient care.
  • Work collaboratively with the Nurse Manager, Metro Life Flight Professional Practice Committee, and assistant medical directors.
  • Be available via provided hospital pager for programmatic needs.
  • Perform pre‑hospital scene survey to ensure safety of patient and crew members and coordinate triage.
  • Evaluate care of patients within scope of flight nurse practitioner using protocols, guidelines, and physician collaboration.
  • Maintain current knowledge of transport medicine standards and responsibilities.
  • Attend a minimum of 60% of scheduled staff meetings and read minutes if absent.
  • Attend a minimum of 50% case review conferences.
  • Attend at least two surgical skills labs per year.
  • Attend operating room or other clinical experience if privilege requirements are not met.
  • Perform techniques and medical procedures, via human patient simulators, to maintain skill levels.
  • Meet all clinical practice, safety, customer service, and flight operations needs set by Metro Life Flight and Metro Health.
  • Consult with other professionals for joint problem solving and set mutual goals related to patient care.
  • Provide resources for other nurses and healthcare providers and offer education as needed.
  • Plan for continuity of care, identify community resources, guide patients and families, and facilitate transfer liaison.
  • Participate in division/department goals and communicate issues in appropriate forums.
  • Support advance practice RN initiatives within Metro Health.
  • Participate or serve as a preceptor for new staff and students.
  • Serve on committees and professional activities and present formal educational programs.
  • Remain current with evidence‑based practice and adhere to national standards and ANA Code of Ethics.
  • Identify learning needs, set goals, and pursue required knowledge and skills.
  • Evaluate professional practice with self, physician, and peer evaluations per state law.
