OPPORTUNITY

Breakthrough Public Schools seeks an experienced and strategic leader to serve as Chief of Staff (COS). Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and serving on the Network Leadership Team, the COS is a key steward of organizational culture, communications, and executive management.

The COS drives organizational strategy and effectiveness through strategic planning, cross-functional leadership, and high-quality execution. They directly manage the Data & Systems team and lead several high-priority initiatives each year.

The ideal candidate is passionate about improving K–12 education, is an influential culture leader, builds strong relationships across diverse stakeholder groups, and brings a deep commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Strong candidates will have senior leadership experience, exceptional strategic judgment, and a strong record of driving results in complex organizations.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES Organizational Leadership

As a member of the Breakthrough Network Leadership Team:

  • Drive the development, implementation, and achievement of Breakthrough’s vision, mission, strategic plan, annual priorities, and goals.
  • Provide input and guidance on major initiatives and problem-solve network-wide challenges.
  • Foster an inclusive, supportive, and mission-aligned organizational culture.
  • Monitor organizational health and belonging practices to strengthen workplace culture.
Strategic Planning and Partnership
  • Serve as a strategic advisor and thought partner to the CEO on day-to-day operations, resource allocation, and organizational priorities.
  • Collaborate with the CEO and NLT on organizational planning, policy development, and execution across teams.
  • Maintain a comprehensive view of all initiatives and ensure strategic priorities are translated into actionable plans.
  • Identify gaps, risks, and opportunities; coordinate solutions with relevant leaders.
  • Manage the development, measurement, and monitoring of annual priorities and goals.
  • Drive cross-functional alignment and communication of strategic decisions.
  • Lead and/or execute high-priority projects on behalf of the CEO.
Executive Management
  • Support the CEO in leading a high-functioning, cohesive leadership team.
  • Design and manage leadership team meeting structures, agendas, and follow-through.
  • Establish clear ownership of work streams following meetings, ensuring that work is brought over the finish line.
  • Create accountability mechanisms to ensure that we collectively meet our goals and objectives to foster a culture of mutual accountability.
  • Partner with the CEO’s Executive Assistant on managing the CEO’s schedule and priorities.
  • Strengthen cross-functional collaboration across all departments.
  • Serve as a proxy, sounding board, and representative for the CEO when needed.
  • Ensure excellent management and implementation of Board structures and processes, including meetings, communications, membership, and performance evaluation.
Executive and Organizational Communication
  • Partner closely with the Senior Advisor to ensure clear, aligned internal and external communications.
  • Lead CEO communications, including drafting and editing presentations, messages, and talking points.
  • Support effective change management through structured communication strategies.
  • Strengthen organizational culture, alignment, and pride through high-quality communication systems.
Data & Systems Team Management
  • Directly manage the Data & Systems team, ensuring strong execution, high-quality service to schools, and alignment with organizational priorities.
  • Coach and develop team members; establish systems for continuous improvement and operational excellence.
