Job Description
Molecular Laboratory Technician at Pretorian Labs
The Molecular Laboratory Specialist, reporting directly to the Technical Supervisor, plays a crucial role in processing specimens, performing DNA and RNA extractions, and conducting RT‑PCR molecular assays. Key responsibilities include maintaining accurate daily logs and communicating diagnostic results to the Technical Supervisor. Candidates should be dedicated to delivering high‑quality service in a collaborative work environment.
Responsibilities- Performs moderate and highly complex analytic processes without direct supervision using routine and specialized automated and non‑automated laboratory procedures, including RT‑PCR assays.
- Ensures operation of all laboratory analytical equipment by calibration, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, inventory management, and evaluation of new equipment and techniques.
- Maintains laboratory supplies inventory by checking stock levels, anticipating needs, placing orders, and verifying receipt of supplies.
- Provides information to internal and external clients by answering questions and requests.
- Prepares reports of technological findings by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing data.
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by completing a minimum of 12 hours of continuing education annually.
- Maintains a safe and clean working environment and protects patients and employees by adhering to infection‑control, hazardous waste, and safety protocols.
- Assists the Molecular Technical Supervisor and the Medical Director in developing and distributing proficiency samples, analysis, and reporting of testing results.
- Identifies the technical, instrumental, and physiological causes of unexpected test results and assists in developing corrective action plans.
- Instructs personnel on new methods and instruments, teaching laboratory procedures, processes, and policies.
- Assists with writing and reviewing Standard Operating Procedures.
- Provides technical information and instruction to clients and new employees as requested.
- Maintains open and effective communication with personnel within the work team and with members of other teams throughout the laboratory.
- Assists the Molecular Technical Supervisor and Medical Director with reviewing and developing quality control metrics.
- Positional requirements: repetitive motions for long periods, and standing and sitting for long periods.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Minimum of a Baccalaureate degree in Medical Technology or related fields and 1 year of clinical experience.
- Baccalaureate degree in Medical Technology or related fields and 4+ years of clinical experience performing molecular assay testing.
- Completion of an internship program from an approved school of Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science.
- ASCP certification, ASCP eligibility, or equivalent.
- Comfortable working in a fast‑paced, high‑volume laboratory with VIP customers.
- Strong attention to detail and effective organization skills.
- Strong verbal, written, and presentation skills.
- Strong critical thinking skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
- Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25‑50 lbs.
- Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting, and gripping.
- Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching, and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.
- Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more), and to identify and distinguish colors.
- Frequent use of hearing and speech to share information through oral communication; ability to hear alarms and malfunctioning machinery.
