Tax Associate

The Tax Associate will be responsible for providing support to in-house tax counsel by providing litigation coordination, preparing appeals protests and managing the appeals process, and assisting with general audit management, including drafting IDR responses. The Tax Associate will also assist with the preparation of various tax forms. The Tax Associate must be an analytical and independent thinker, detail-oriented, and possess superior organizational skills.

This role will work closely with the Tax and Legal departments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Transaction execution: review letters of intent, purchase agreements, prepare transaction maps.
• Tax compliance: assist in the preparation of tax planning and disclosure documents. Work with the outside accounting firm to ensure the tax filings are accurate and complete.
• Audit management: draft IDR responses, manage statute of limitations filings, assist with IRS interviews and site visits, and research legal positions in the context of BBA partnership audits.
• Appeals preparation and management: draft protests, plan for and participate in Appeals conferences.
• Appraisal review: review property appraisals to ensure compliance with tax regs.
• Litigation assistance and coordination: assist with strategy for litigation and work with outside counsel on legal issues.
• FOIA: draft and review FOIA requests and productions.
• Research and writing: research legal issues, write briefs, articles, and memoranda as needed.

• 4-7 years of relevant experience.
• CPA or JD or equivalent experience required.
• Previous tax controversy experience preferred.
• Experience with historic preservation easements, historic tax credits, and other Federal and state incentives preferred.
